Stanton Says Bush Is It

Michigan State’s Drew Stanton says that Reggie Bush should win the Heisman, in a story by the Detroit News’ Dave Dye.

But the nation’s pass efficiency leader is pretty special, too, which is why Michigan State is undefeated and looking like one of the favorites to win the Big Ten right now.

“It’s nice to be mentioned in the same breath as the elite athletes in college football,” Stanton said, “but the biggest thing is for us as a team to be successful.”

The amazing thing? He’s just scratching the surface, according to his coach John L. Smith.

Given his injury issues last season, it’s easy to root for Stanton. He could be this year’s Alex Smith–an out-of-nowhere Heisman finalist and a high pick in the next NFL draft.

Apparently, his dream is to lead the Spartans to a win over Michigan.

How obsessed is he with U-M? He tore the cover off a video game because it had a Michigan player on it.

Now that’s hard core. But really, I hope he has higher things to shoot for than a win over the hapless Wolverines.

The best Drew–by far–in the Big Ten

Stupid Item Of The Week

An Iowa professor is mad that the Hawkeye football team paints its opposing locker room pink.

This is a longstanding practice since the days of Hayden Fry, who believed that the pink walls had a calming effect on people.

So this law professor on campus with a lot of time on his hands joins up with other groups and says using pink demeans women and perpetuates negative stereotypes of women and homosexuality.

Of course, he is now receiving death threats.

I’m not endorsing those threats, but this guy should at least be ridiculed for being a complete waste of space.

Football coach Kirk Ferentz smartly distanced himself from the controversy.

“I mean this with all due respect, but it’s not really on my laundry list right now,” said Ferentz, whose Hawkeyes fell to 2-2 after losing to Ohio State last weekend. “I’ve got other things that have moved in front of it.”

How does using the color pink demean women? That’s news to me. Personally, I think women look good in pink.

Where Have You Gone Teddy Ginn?

There was a lot of talk in the preseason about Ted Ginn being a legitimate Heisman candidate.

We never bought it.

First off, we don’t think a sophomore is going to win the Trophy anytime soon anyway.

Second, while we love Ginn’s ability, he has yet to show that he is much of a football player. He is way less refined as a receiver than his teammate Santonio Holmes. In essence, he is just a flashy talent at this point–a shiny hood ornament on the hood of an Ohio State offense that is the equivalent of a 1975 Pinto.

When will Teddy break out?

So far this season, Ginn is the third-leading receiver on the Buckeyes with 13 catches for 152 yards and 1 TD. The speedster is averaging just 11.7 yards per catch. He is averaging 8.9 yards per punt return and 21.1 yards per kick return.

Pretty pedestrian.

Now, some will probably say that defenses are playing extra attention to Ginn. That may be true. But it looks to our eye like Ginn spent more time in the offseason reading his press clippings rather than refining his game.

If we were him, we’d go over to defense and become a full-time cornerback. That’s where he’s best-suited to play in the NFL anyway and he can still be a major factor as a returner.

While he has been disappointing to watch this season, that doesn’t mean we should have to listen to inane comments from announcers claiming Buckeye receiver Anthony Gonzalez is faster than Ginn.

That nonsense has got to stop.

In the meantime, we’re still on the edge of our seats waiting to see Ginn’s first ‘did-you-see-that’ highlight of the year.

L S Who?

It sure didn’t take long for the team that Collegefootballnews.com picked to make the Rose Bowl, for the team it wrongly (hell, almost criminally) called the most talented squad in the country to lose at home to a discombobulated team headed by the lousy Phil Fulmer.

Last night’s game was hardly the instant classic many will make it out to be. It was a slugfest between two not-very-good teams. The announcers said it was a shame someone had to lose. I say it was a shame that someone had to win.

And can we please stop making excuses for LSU and Les Miles by talking about the issues with the hurricane? The Katrina disaster didn’t seem to stop the Tigers from going up 21-0 and 24-7.

Oh and how bad is the LSU secondary? First they give up 460 yards to Sam Keller, then allow 196 yards to Rick Clausen in a little over a half (250 overall).

LSU is lucky that it is not 0-2 at this point. But then, they would probably be 2-0 if Fulmer hadn’t made his halftime conversion to the Church of Clausen.

Here We Go Again

We harped on it last week and well before that, but can we all agree that Phil Fulmer completely screwed up his quarterback situation by playing Erik Ainge instead of Rick Clausen?

“Getting done what he got done, coming back here to win this football game at a place where he had been, I don’t know if there is a better story in the world than what this guy has done,” Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said.

What ‘this guy’ has done is overcome the moronic actions of his head coach. There may not be a better story in the world in that case.

A worse story is how Fulmer screwed this kid over by playing favorites, all at the expense of the team. Fulmer should apologize to the entire Tennessee fan base his actions.

If he had only listened to us, he might be 3-0 right now
