Bandwagon Longhorn Fans

Burnt Orange Nation recently wrote up this piece on sports fans in different regions of the country.

Naturally, Texas is lauded for having the nation’s best fan base. But then, what else would one expect from a Longhorn website? Certainly not objectivity.

(Of course, regions like the South, which live and die for their teams, get a lower overall grade than Texas. I might not like SEC football much, but their fan dedication is unmatched. Also, while I agree with the notion that West Coast fans are also of the fair weather variety, it is NOT because of a lack of sports knowledge, but due to TOO MUCH sports knowledge. Someone who understands how truly bad their team is probably isn’t going to be as supportive. I think there is an inverse relationship between overall sports knowledge and vociferousness of the fan base…but I digress)

If you want a more balanced look at the kind of fans you are likely to see in the great state of Texas, check out this story from the Dallas Observer, which takes Dallas sports fans to task for their bandwagon love of the Longhorns following their win in the Rose Bowl.

I’m not sure whether I need to be embarrassed or I want to be evicted. Talk about pride all you want, but know this: When the University of Southern California won the title last season, the folks up the coast in San Francisco were way too proud to go dancin’ in the streets or go slappin’ full-page posters of Matt Leinart in their major-market newspaper….God bless us, we’re more fake than Milli Vanilli serenading a topless Pamela Anderson. The same Orangebloods that tried to bury Brown and founded www.firegregdavis.com (“site currently unavailable”) now want to erect statues of the coach and offensive coordinator inside our state Capitol’s rotunda.

Said a local radio talk show host: “For two years, UT fans called our show complaining that Mack can’t win the big game….Now they’re comparing him to Darrell Royal.”

As the article states, everything truly is bigger in Texas.

Especially the bandwagon.

Any room left?
