The BCS Strikes Back

I make no bones about my love of The Great Billboard War of ’06. It’s January, folks, and while signing day for recruits is less than a week away, there’s not much else going on in college football. What’s wrong with a little theater and hijinks if it is all in good fun?

As you may or may not know, the people at onepeat.com raised $10,000 to put up a billboard near the USC campus challenging the Trojans’ claim to a share of the 2003 national title.

In response, a self-proclaimed fatcat USC alum at uscdynasty.com countered with his own billboard drive–out of his own pocket. This one, though, is to go up in Baton Rouge.

Various other sites have kicked in their opinions, the most creative and funny being onepeatbog.com. Yet another–foraworthycause.com–is trying to shame everyone involved into donating money to Katrina relief (never mind that the feds are pumping in zillions of bucks and any amount raised will be a drop in the ocean).

Even the computer nerds are getting involved, as onepeat.com was subject to a cyber attack a couple days ago, resulting in a shutdown of its site.

We have been following this throughout and providing commentary along the way because, frankly, we’ve never seen something like this before. Who knew there was so much passion out there on this issue? My original post on the subject elicited an HP-record 124 comments.

So why is the title of this entry ‘The BCS Strikes Back?’

Well, HP has learned that Onepeat.com will never put up its proposed billboard due to issues with the BCS. Seems the BCS people are not happy with unauthorized images of the crystal ball trophy being used on the Onepeat design. Legal action has apparently been threatened. So Onepeat will either be delayed indefinitely, or will have to come up with a new design (they say they are doing so). In the meantime, they have decided to put up a billboard in Baton Rouge, which they claim should be up within 10 days. Sure, it’ll be off the 10 Freeway, but about 2,400 miles east of where it was supposed to be. Putting up an LSU billboard in Baton Rouge doesn’t strike me as too impressive–wasn’t the original idea to make USC people eat their livers?

Meanwhile, this story in the Baton Rouge Advocate reveals that uscdynasty.com is making like Sherman through Atlanta, having already found the exact street location for its billboard which will be up within two weeks.

The back-and-forth continues….now I know why they say war is hell.
