Much was made of USC’s attempt at a three-peat, but not many have noticed that the Trojans are also going for a four-peat in recruiting.
USC has been ranked No. 1 in recruiting by at least one of the major services for each of the last three years–obviously a key to its recent success. The Trojans are poised to challenge Florida for the No. 1 class this year as well. If a couple uncommitted players break the Trojans’ way on Wednesday, at least one service is likely to put USC at the top.
So, what does it all mean? Well, for starters, it’s another very impressive feat and I can’t say as I’ve ever seen it happen in all the years I’ve followed recruiting.
Going back to what I wrote a little while ago, it’s also the prime reason why I don’t see much of a dropoff for the Trojans in the next few years, as some have predicted (or hoped for).
When you get four-straight No. 1 classes, you are are filling your roster with most of the players that most of the schools want. And while recruiting rankings aren’t everything, it does increase your likelihood of success if you have a good coach in place.
Look at this year’s NFL draft. USC is likely to have at least five and possibly a record seven first-round picks. But of that group, most are early entries from the 2003 recruiting class, which means that most of that top class and all of two others is just now maturing–with a 37-2 mark and two titles already in the bank (and another top class coming in).
USC may drop off for a lot of reasons, but I doubt it will be because of lack of talent.
