I’m back and I’m ready to roll! Some thoughts on a Tuesday….
–The brouhaha between ESPN’s Colin Cowherd and Michigan Zone has now come and gone without any commentary from HP, who was taking a break. Suffice it to say that Cowherd came out on the wrong end of things. Check out this nice bit from Yost on the new role of blogs and their relation to the media. Sounds a little like what I was trying to talk about last summer.
–Bruce Feldman reveals in his latest blog entry that Florida State quarterback Drew Weatherford is descended from William “Braveheart” Wallace. I wonder how his pep talks are when he’s in the huddle?
–The amazing Ahmad Brooks has been dismissed from the Virginia football program by head coach Al Groh. Don’t be surprised if Brooks makes his way to the supplemental draft, where he would be a bargain for any team that wants him. Clearly, he has other issues going on, but there is no denying his talent.
–Blue & Gold Illustrated recently named its all-Notre Dame team of the last 25 years. Only two players, corner Shane Walton and center Jeff Faine, played after 1994. Ivan Maisel of ESPN notes that that speaks volumes about the Irish from 1995-2004. I would point out that even Walton’s inclusion on that list is a slop to recent years. How does Walton beat out Todd Lyght, Tom Carter, Jeff Burris AND Bobby Taylor on that list?
–More Maisel: This time on the arrival of Dan Hawkins at Colorado. A very interesting look at the former Boise State coach as he tries to become the ‘vehicle of excellence’ for the Buffaloes. Another neat tidbit: Hawkins recently bonded with Pete Carroll at a coaching clinic.
“I felt very familiar with him without knowing him very well,” Carroll said last week. “I kind of took to him right off the bat. When he delivered his speech down here, which was the first time I’ve heard him at any length, we have a tremendous amount in common. I wasn’t surprised. Our coaches who were there in the audience were half in shock. They wanted to know, ‘How did he know that stuff?’”
How, indeed. Anyone who can do what he did at Boise must know a thing or two.
–By now most of you have probably heard that a Daily Trojan sports writer tried out for the USC football team as an experiment and ended up actually making the team. Get ready to know the name Ben Malcomson very soon, as television producers and newspaper reporters nationwide are salivating at his story. Some think he won’t last through the spring, but I think he is sure to stick with the team into the fall. After all, if he gets cut, he may just write an ‘expose’ of life as a USC football player. Doubt Pete Carroll would want that! In the meantime, it’s nice that college football has its very own George Plimpton.
–The odds to win the BCS title game are out. Ohio State and Notre Dame are on top, followed by Oklahoma, then USC and Texas. Collegefootballnews.com has a top five of USC, Texas, Louisville, Auburn and Notre Dame.
