Almost a year ago, I wrote that Vince Young is a revolutionary player who would redefine the quarterback position.
A lot of people didn’t agree. Some thought that he wouldn’t be able to run in the NFL like he did in college. Others felt he couldn’t throw, that his unorthodox motion would do him in.
While it’s still early in his career, the initial returns are in and, naturally, both of these sentiments have turned out to be nonsense. Young is suddenly the hottest rookie in the league and the subject of stories like this from ESPN and this from Sports Illustrated.
He has 462 rushing yards this year, which is a record for a rookie QB and more than Reggie Bush–the first running back drafted–can claim. While other rookie quarterbacks continue to struggle, his team has won five in a row and seven of its last nine. The playoffs are in sight for the Titans.
What’s amazing to me is how so many people refuse to believe their own eyes when it comes to Young. So many traditionalists still pine for that prototypical statue who can hang tough in the pocket. Meanwhile, Young is a 6-5, 240 pounder who can throw with accuracy and run like a first-round pick at running back.
What more do you want?
