Leave Troy Smith Alone

Now that he had one of the worst–if not THE worst–bowl game performance in Heisman history, calls are coming now that Troy Smith somehow was a fraud and that he did not deserve the trophy.

Hogwash.

Who should have received it, if not Smith? Darren McFadden? His team lost its last three games and he had just 89 yards in his bowl game. Brady Quinn? He wasn’t even the best quarterback in his bowl game. Steve Slaton? He barely played in his bowl and he performed poorly in a huge loss to South Florida near the season’s end.

Colt Brennan? Maybe a case can be made for him, but no one is doing so.

In the meantime, let’s reiterate: Troy Smith deserved the Heisman. He had a great season and led his team to the BCS title game. He and his team got crushed and he played poorly, but he deserved the Heisman. He doesn’t ‘suck’ and he isn’t ‘overrated.’

That is all.
