Importance of Offensive Schemes In College Football
How is it that one can read a preview of the 2006 LSU Tigers and not see a single mention of the new system that has been implemented by former Oregon offensive coordinator Gary Crowton? If a car model switched from eight cylinders to six cylinders, wouldn’t that be of interest to auto enthusiasts? Why should it be any different with college football?
But it is.
Offenses are the catalyst for change in college football. Every new wrinkle on offense creates a counter-wrinkle on defense. We’ve been lucky enough the last few years to see a bunch of innovative offenses taking center stage.
Some think my interest in offensive schemes comes at the expense of other areas of football, whether it be defense, talent level, emotion, momentum, length of cheerleader skirts, etc. That is hardly the case. Rather, I feel that discussion of scheme and its importance to the game has been sorely lacking in recent years. My focus on the subject has helped elevate the subject closer to its rightful place in the college football discussion.
