Weekend Heisman Preview

With just a few players left who can actually win the Heisman, we are getting to the point where the games are really starting to matter.

Here’s a look at what to watch for this weekend:

  • Tonight’s game between West Virginia and South Florida will showcase both Pat White and Steve Slaton. White has already separated himself somewhat from his running mate and this game will probably continue that trend. It seems that whenever WVU is in a tough game, it turns to White, who almost always comes through. I look for White to have a big game tonight and solidify his status as one of the top two quarterbacks in this race.
  • Kansas State visits Texas and Heisman candidate Jamaal Charles on Saturday. This is a dangerous game for the Longhorns as they’ll have to avoid looking ahead to the Oklahoma game the following week. I think Charles will continue his solid play (he’s got three 100-yard games already this year) and put himself in position to make a move in the race with a big game against OU.
  • Colt Brennan and Hawaii travel to Idaho. Brennan did not play last week due to a sore ankle and he will have to step it up on Saturday if he wants to stay in the race. Hawaii usually has trouble away from home and I think this one could be closer than people think due to Idaho’s offensive prowess. Still, look for Brennan to throw for over 400 yards and 6 TDs.
  • Heisman front runner Darren McFadden and Arkansas host North Texas. This should be a showcase game for the Hog running attack, but it could also be out of reach by halftime, which means McFadden may not play a whole lot. Too bad, since this game is a prime opportunity to add a bunch of yards to his stat resume. If he wants his 150-plus yards, he may have to do it quick.
  • John David Booty and USC head to Seattle to take on Washington. I think Booty will be called upon to throw quite a bit in this one, as the Trojans will probably focus on getting their young receivers more involved in the passing attack.
  • Tim Tebow‘s Gators host Auburn. We’ll get to see how the sophomore phenom handles the sudden Heisman glare that has shifted his way. I think he’ll do just fine.

    The Aftermath

Don’t expect much of a change in the Heisman race after this weekend, unless someones gets hurt or an upset occurs in either Austin, Gainesville or Seattle.
