The Heismandments Strike Back

Just when I think that one of the 10 Heismandments is headed for the ash heap of history, it bounces back to life, stronger than ever.

I had resigned myself to the notion that Heismandment No. 2 was set to expire due to the irresistible force that is Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.

After all, the Heisman race had been in a shambles for a couple weeks. Something had to give, right? With college football experiencing one of its craziest seasons, I figured maybe this was the time for a sophomore to finally win.

But, as we know, Florida fell to Georgia on Saturday and the Gators now stand at 5-3.

I suppose Florida can win out and finish 9-3, but I don’t know if the math will allow an appearance in the SEC title game or not. I do not think that Tebow can win the Heisman as a sophomore if the Gators do not make it to Atlanta. Maybe Tebow’s numbers will make his case too compelling even at 9-3, but I doubt it.

So it appears that, once again, the Heismandments will stand strong at season’s end. Shame on me for doubting my own canon!

When it comes to the race, maybe it means that Dennis Dixon makes a late charge at the wire, even without his image being plastered all over Times Square (though now might be a good time to consider that option).

The way things are going, this season could feature perhaps the greatest cliffhanger ending in Heisman history. The Heisman folks may have to bring 10 players to the ceremony.

In the end, the winner’s fate may be tied to the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of the campaign made on his behalf. My sense is that there are a ton of confused voters out there who will need convincing come early December. Now is when a well-conceived campaign could make a difference, as the Heisman narrative currently lacks both plot and hero. How ironic that the race could hinge on the same silly campaigns that get belittled every preseason.

I suppose it’s time now for SIDs to step up to the plate. Get those bobbleheads ready. Start printing those notepads. It’s anyone’s race, after all.

See you later on Monday with the Top 10 teams and the HP Heisman Watch.
