Some Thoughts Before The Plunge

Some of you who know me know how much I detest the NBA and pro sports in general.   So how am I letting myself watch the Celtics-Lakers tonight?  I don’t know.  I think it helps to keep the sound muted and to only occasionally glance at the screen.  It makes the never-ending game of ‘clear-it-out, high pick-n-roll, kick-it-out, then either shoot or drive‘ only slightly bearable.

I used to be a huge Lakers fan back when the NBA was actually legitimate and there was a time when the idea of a Celtic title would produce a real conniption in me.  It was easy to hate Boston when they had so many ugly players and ugly fans and the alternative was the upscale, flashy Lakers who played just down the freeway.

But that was a long time ago and I now confess to having watched a grand total of perhaps 1 or 2 NBA games this season.  Combined.  It’s not like anyone else is watching, either, as ratings have been plummeting.  It’s just a bad product that keeps getting worse and nothing bores me more than hearing grown men talk about a bad product while pretending it isn’t getting worse.

Thank God for college football.  It’s not perfect, but it is still infinitely more appealing than almost every professional sport.  Give me Saturdays in the fall–you can have the rest.
