Some 2009 Candidates

Welcome visitors from SI on Campus.  Be sure to book mark us and come back soon!

So who’s going to emerge from the 2008 season looking strong for the 2009 Heisman?

I figure Chris Wells, Percy Harvin and Tim Tebow will turn pro.

That leaves the following as possible contenders, assuming each produces a quality, resume-building season in 2008:

Stafon Johnson, Joe McKnight and Mark Sanchez of USC.

Sam Bradford and DeMarco Murray of Oklahoma.

Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame.

Knowshon Moreno and Matt Stafford of Georgia.

Noel Devine, West Virginia.

Javarris James, Miami.

Jake Locker, Washington

Colt McCoy, Texas

Jeremy Maclin, Missouri

Zac Robinson, Oklahoma State

Feel free to add some more to this list in the comments section…

What about Brandon Minor/Carlos Brown out of Michigan? Rich Rodriguez is going to find a back to feature and after a year to gel their line could help whoever it is put up big numbers. Both were more highly rated than Slaton out of high school, and Brown definitely has the speed to play in RRs offense.

  2. HP June 24, 2008 at 6:16 am #

Perhaps. I thought about them, but wasn’t sure how the position would shake out for UM. Also, what about McGuffie?

While I agree Wells and Harvin will go pro after 2009, I think Tebow probably won’t. I think he loves the college game, and constant doubts about his “draftability” leave too many reasons to come back for a senior year.

Although if I were a recruiting scout for the NFL, I would have such dreams about drafting Tebow as a running back. Can you imagine the nightmares defensive coordinators would have if every running play could at the drop of a hat morph back into a passing play? And because he’s the RB instead of QB, you don’t have to worry about EVERYTHING falling apart when your big runner goes down…

    Really? No Chase Daniel? Really?

  5. Ed Newman June 24, 2008 at 1:28 pm #

Chase Daniel is a senior this season. He won’t be eligible in 2009.

How about Juice Williams as a 2009 dark horse?

  6. D June 24, 2008 at 3:02 pm #

    Mike Goodson from Texas A&M.

  7. Spencer June 24, 2008 at 3:30 pm #

I agree with Non E MOuse Tebow won’t go pro he wants to graduate. If you listen to his Heisman acceptence speach he rates the important things in his life as:
    1. Religon
    2. Family
    3. School
    4. Football
I doubt he will skip his senior season.

If Teabag can win it as a sophomore then Terrell Pryor, Terrell Pryor, Terrell Pryor, Terrell Pryor, Terrell Pryor, Terrell Pryor, Terrell Pryor, Terrell Pryor, Terrell Pryor!

  9. Wil June 24, 2008 at 4:32 pm #

Spencer, How many guys say they want to graduate and won’t leave early? You can’t blame them for it and I think Tebow would be stupid not to. Beanie Wells has already been quoted as saying he is staying all 4 years but I’m sure that will change too.

Graig Cooper is gonna steal half of Javarris James’ carries this year, and projects as the better back going forward.

P.J. Hill should have the resume, if not the team, to seriously contend, although the winner will probably be a quarterback.

  15. Chris June 24, 2008 at 5:31 pm #

Tebow won’t turn Pro, but its very doubtful he’ll have more than 2 cracks at the Heisman. There’s just too many great athletes for the voters to zero in on Tebow.

Then again, he might turn out to be the greatest thing ever and just force voters to give him every award possible, including the Tony.

  16. AFM June 24, 2008 at 5:45 pm #

Why won’t Tim Tebow turn pro? He may be a good guy, but the NFL will give him 50 million reasons to leave. That’s a lot of reasons.

And HP, as much as I would like to say Sam McGuffie, I don’t know if he will start until his junior year. Even then he will be competing with Michael Shaw, a slightly bigger back who is just as fast. Shaw was the MVP in the Penn/Ohio all-star game recently, showing McGuffie isn’t exactly a shoe-in as the only impact freshman. McGuffie can make people look stupid in the open field though, no doubt about it.

    Josh Freeman Kansas State

  18. Bruce June 24, 2008 at 6:41 pm #

TIM TEBOW IS COLLEGE FOOTBALL. HE IS THE BEST ALL ROUND COLLEGE ATHLETE SINCE BO JACKSON. TEBOW MAY WIN IT FOUR YEARS IN A ROW. TEBOW TEBOW TEBOW TEBOW. PLUS, HE IS A BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN AND A CREDIT AND POSITIVE EXAMPLE TO ALL HUMANITY, NOT JUST FOOTBALL. GO #15

  19. Pete June 24, 2008 at 6:51 pm #

From what I have heard, Matt Stafford of Georgia is more of a Pro Style QB than Tim Tebow. I think Tebow has the skills where he could play QB, but he would take a little longer (2-3 years rather than 1-2 years) to be ready.

However, I think Tim Tebow would be a phenom Fullback who could also pass. Of course, Fullbacks do not do well enough to come out early.

I expect both QBs will stay for their senion year, but Stafford is more likely to be drafted early enough to warrant coming out early.

Percy Harvin relies on speed and has a much shorter shelf life. If he stays healthy and does well, it makes more sense to me that he would come out early.

won’t McGuffie still be a sophomore for the 09 season

  21. anon June 24, 2008 at 7:04 pm #

Tyrod Taylor of Virginia Tech! Book it!

  22. Brent June 24, 2008 at 7:21 pm #

Tebow wont go pro… Harvin probably will.

I see Stafford having a better chance at leaving early than Tebow, but they both stay.

I cant believe how many of you are suggesting some sophomore or another when (1) we havent seen any of them play a down of college football and (2) they would have to have a Tebow like season to do it… which they wont.

  23. Josh D June 24, 2008 at 8:32 pm #

Stafford is as good as gone after this season, assuming he once again improves. He has the best mechanics and build of any quarterback that would come out next year and always said growing up he would either win the Heisman or be a Top-5 pick in the draft.

He’s proven me wrong everytime I’ve doubted him so far, so I’m going to go with my gut and say he will happily be the first QB selected this year, but no Heisman.

  24. Bowie1989 June 24, 2008 at 8:55 pm #

AE-Appalachian State…how can he be considered this season and not be mentioned for his senior year?

  25. razorfan June 25, 2008 at 3:52 am #

    Ryan Mallett

Big, strong arm and patrino offense. huge numbers. Problem might be wins.

  26. Anonymous June 25, 2008 at 1:22 pm #

Shady McCoy will be long gone by 2009.

  27. GTA June 25, 2008 at 3:09 pm #

You’re assuming that Tebow and Harvin will go pro and real pro-prospects like Moreno and Stafford won’t? Moreno is a RS Sophomore, which means he would be eligible for the draft next year and Stafford is a junior. I put money on them entering the draft next year.

  28. Joe June 25, 2008 at 4:56 pm #

Todd Reesing Kansas QB. The schedule will rotate away from Texas and Oklahoma in 2009.

  29. Eddie (Ball-more, MD) July 1, 2008 at 3:22 pm #

I know LSU has a crowded backfield but how about Keiland Williams. This guy is a 225 lb RB with blazing speed and the ability to “hit home runs” everytime he touches the ball. If he gets the touches then he will have a chance.

People will not take Arizona’s Wildcats and Willie Tuitama seriously until they are 5 or 6 and 0 and making a run at the rose bowl. Keep an eye on that spread offense.

chris wells is so going to win

  32. Anonymous December 9, 2008 at 11:29 am #

Soph. Case Keenum of U. of Houston.Bryce Beall as freshman had 1100+ yards rushing so if UH can get a decent defense, then Keenum will be a low consideration, but considered nonetheless.Compare Keenum’s stats to that of Harrell and Bradford this year.
