And why not?  As Chris Dufresne of the LA Times notes:

The conference has the nation’s top-ranked team, Oklahoma, four schools ranked in the top seven, six teams ranked in the top 25, and nine quarterbacks ranked in the top 20 of this week’s NCAA pass efficiency statistics.

I would add to that list:  The nation’s top three Heisman candidates.

Now, I remember last week everyone making a HUGE deal over how the SEC had five teams ranked in the top 10.  Surely, what the Big 12 has done so far is equally as impressive.

But for the most part:  Crickets.

  1. I think the lack of hype about the Big 12 right now is mainly due to their extremely weak schedules thus far.

Quick: what is the Big 12′s best win so far?
    Got anything yet?

Sure, once the teams start conference play and sort themselves out, we’ll know who’s good and who’s posing. Right now, though, Oklahoma and Missouri are the only ones of their ranked teams who have tangible on-field results against teams with a pulse (though admittedly Illinois, Cincinnati, and TCU were all considerable underdogs).

Just as the SEC teams have commenced beating each other out of the top 25, so will the Big 12 teams soon enough. It’s mathematically foolish to think that half of any league could possibly finish the season ranked. They play each other, so one team’s going to pick up a loss in each game.

  2. Granted. But it’s not like before last week the SEC schedule had started and that didn’t stop the pundits from breathlessly extolling that league.

  3. OU, Texas, and Missouri have played no one who had any defense whatsoever…might as well give the damn heisman to Michael Bishop…

  4. The Big 12 will be exposed just like they have been in the past. The best team any Big 12 team has played is Illinois and they laid 42 on Missouri.

Oklahoma will get beat in their bowl game. Hopefully it won’t be Boise again.

  5. yo, Dawg:

two weeks ago Colorado defeated West Virginia (currently ranked #21)

last time I looked Colorado was indeed in the Big 12 Conference (in fact, they still are even now)

that 42 Illinois scored included a TD on the last play of the game – big deal

Oklahoma soundly defeated Cincinnati of the Big East, a team that is 3-1 (only loss being to Oklahoma)

Texas hammered Arkansas of the mighty SEC

So, other than USC-Ohio State and Mizzou-Illinois, tell me what big, h uge, important game anyone in the SEC or elsewhere has played that’s non-conference?

Georgia starts off with ever so impressive wins over Georgia Southern and Central Michigan, perennial powerhouses both, no doubt

LSU has defeated the mighty Appalachain State and North Texas, right

Auburn has defeated Louisiana-Monroe and yeah, scored a whopping 3 points against Mississippi State

deal with it – the Big 12 is as good if not better than the SEC, better than Big 10, better than PAC-10 … there’s a reason those BIG 12 teams are ranked where they are: they ARE that good!

  6. Didn’t Colorado get their butt whipped by Fla. State who’s only wins are Western Carolina and Chattanooga?

Cincinati??? They’ve beat Eastern Kentucky, Miami O. and, Akron by 2 points. That’s a big win? Give me break!

Texas hammered Arkansas…so what who hasn’t?

Ga. Southern and Central Michigan is better competition than Arkansas and Cincinnati.

Yo, got any other piss-poor examples?
