McCoy Remains Unanimous Choice Of Heismanpundit.com/Orlando Sentinel Heisman Poll Voters

For release: Oct. 28, 2008

For the second week in a row, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy swept all 10 first place votes in the Heismanpundit.com/Orlando Sentinel Heisman Poll, a weekly survey of Heisman voters from around the country.

McCoy, who led No. 1 Texas to its third-straight win over a top-11 ranked team, was a unanimous selection after throwing for a career-best 391 yards against then-No. 6 Oklahoma State this past weekend.

“Colt McCoy keeps playing at a ridiculously high level and he’s the main reason Texas is ranked No. 1,” said one voter. “He’s led the Longhorns to consecutive victories over Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State and if he can do it this week against Texas Tech he should start working on his acceptance speech.”

Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell collected six second-place votes and 33 total points to finish second, setting up a showdown with McCoy this coming Saturday.  Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was close behind with 32 points.

Defending Heisman winner Tim Tebow bounced back into the top four with 14 points.  His Gators team will take on Knowshon Moreno (10 points) and Georgia on Saturday.

This Week’s Poll, with points (first place votes in parentheses):

Colt McCoy, QB, Texas–50 (10)

Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech–33

Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma–32

Tim Tebow, QB, Florida–14

Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia–10

Kendall Hunter, RB, Oklahoma State–6

Chase Daniel, QB, Missouri–3

Daryll Clark, QB, Penn State–1

Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa–1

The Heismanpundit.com/Orlando Sentinel Heisman Poll is made up of 10 Heisman voters from across the country and will be conducted each week during the college football season. The idea is to get a good sense of voter sentiment as the season progresses. The panel votes for five players each week. Tabulations are made on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis, with five points for a first-place vote, four points for a second-place vote, three points for a third-place vote, two points for a fourth-place vote and one point for a fifth-place vote.

Members of the panel include: Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel, Olin Buchanan of Rivals.com, Tom Dienhart of Rivals.com, Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com, J.B. Morris of ESPN The Magazine, Jenni Carlson of The Oklahoman, Austin Murphy of Sports Illustrated, B.J. Schecter of Sports Illustrated, Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated and Dick Weiss of the New York Daily News.

Who’s Going To New York?

If I had to guess:

Colt McCoy (duh)

Sam Bradford

Graham Harrell

If Florida beats Georgia, Tim Tebow might sneak in there, too.

Otherwise, it’ll be a Big 12 quarterback-fest.

The HP Heisman Watch, Week 9

Colt McCoy is one game away from clinching the Heisman Trophy.

Beat Texas Tech and it’s his.

There is a little bit of a Graham Harrell boomlet going on, but it will not be enough to overtake McCoy.

If Texas loses to Texas Tech, Harrell will be in the spotlight–briefely–but I think it is a bit of a stretch to assume the Red Raiders will survive their schedule, as games with Oklahoma State and Oklahoma follow on the heels of the Longhorns.  As long as McCoy plays well the rest of the year, he could lose one game and survive in the race as long as Tech doesn’t win out.

McCoy had another incredible game last Saturday.  He is redefining the meaning of the word ‘accurate’.  How is it possible that his worst completion percentage of the season was 69 percent?  He has been above 80 percent in 6 of his 8 games.

He is projected to have 3,300 passing yards, 30 touchdown passes, 6 interceptions, complete 82% of his passes and also have 600 rushing yards with another 11 rushing touchdowns.  Furthermore, he will be the reason that Texas had the season it did.

More on Harrell and his chances later.
