What sort of wins/stats would Colt McCoy need to win the Heisman this year?
Ross, the first thing to remember is that the Heisman race doesn’t happen in a vacuum. McCoy might have an outstanding year, just as he did in 2008, and still not win the Heisman because of something someone else does that we can’t account for right now. At this time last year, no one figured Sam Bradford was going to throw 50 touchdown passes.
That said, I do think McCoy is this year’s preseason frontrunner. Why? Well, for one, he’s the strongest candidate out there who has not yet won the Heisman. As we know, winning the Heisman once makes it a lot harder to win it again. Bradford has a bit of an uphill battle due to his having to top an incredible year, while Tim Tebow is bordering on overexposure–and maybe a bit of a backlash–in his quest. McCoy finished second in the Heisman and did well in his bowl and if he can do again what he did last year, then voters might feel it is his turn.
We’ll get deeper into the debate as the summer goes on, but I think that if McCoy approximates what he accomplished last season statistically and leads Texas to the Big 12 title, then he’s got a great shot to win the Heisman.

NO. According to #9 it is IMPOSSIBLE to win it again.
Just hedging your bets, huh. Show some guts and just retire #9 now.

Cripes. Of course it is not IMPOSSIBLE to win the Heisman twice. It is just highly IMPROBABLE. The Heismandments weigh real-world probabilities in order to come up with an educated look at the Heisman.
So, my point stands that it is much harder to win twice–highly improbable, in fact–so no bets are being hedged and my guts remain on display on the subject, as they have since 2004.

Well, it seems to me that you’ve taken a much firmer stance on the matter in the past. Lucky for you I’m too lazy to scour the archives for proof, but your readers know the truth. Perhaps the Heismandment shouldn’t read that there will NEVER be another two-time winner.
Maybe its time to rename the Heismandments to something less firm, like maybe the Heisman Highly Improbable Guidelines.
