California head coach Jeff Tedford announced Kevin Riley as the starting quarterback for the Golden Bears’ season-opener versus Maryland on September 5 during a post-practice session with media at Memorial Stadium on Monday.

“Kevin Riley is going to be the starter,” Tedford said. “They’ve all played really well, and we feel very fortunate to be in a position to have three quality quarterbacks. But, Kevin is experienced with game situations and the offense. He’s been more accurate and consistent throwing the ball. It’s evident by all the things going on at the line of scrimmage that Kevin is comfortable with the amount of offense that goes in every day. He’s used to game-planning and does a nice job with that.”

“I’m going to try to make this team the best possible,” said Riley. “We have weapons on offense, and we’re going to be a tough team to guard. Hopefully, I can just run the offense as best as possible.”

If Riley is effective this year, he could have an effect on the Heisman race by keeping some of the defensive pressure off of Jahvid Best.

  1. As a Cal grad and longtime fan, I’m a natural pessimist. I couldn’t believe how erratic Riley was last year after how good he looked as a freshman in ’07. At least I won’t have to watch Nate Longshore get progressively worse each week (when he was a sophomore, he seemed pretty good).

If Riley’s better, Best can stay out of the hospital and a reciever can step up, I might actually get optimistic. Even without Mack, I think the o-line will be good. The defense should be good, even with losing some good linebackers. They still have Mike Mohammed at linebacker and he will be very good (and he’s apparently been unaffected by the fact he was depicted in the NCAA 09 football game as black. Yes, Cal has a linebacker named Mohammed who’s white. Welcome to Berkeley.).
