The HP Heisman Watch

Here is my list of the candidates with the best chance of actually winning the Heisman.

1. Colt McCoy, Texas–McCoy is coming off a 470-yard outburst against UCF.  On the year, he is completing 73 percent of his passes for 2,447 yards, 17 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.  He is on pace to have 3,534 yards, 25 touchdowns and 13 interceptions by the time the Heisman vote is due.  His remaining games are against Baylor, Kansas and Texas A&M so, barring an upset, his team will be undefeated heading into the Big 12 title game.  Should he perform well in that game and guide Texas to a berth in the BCS title game, then the smart money is on him to win the Heisman.  In the end, his status as a senior quarterback for a title-contending team with superior name recognition, solid statistics and admirable career resume (which should include the most wins by a QB in NCAA history), should carry him over the top.

2. Mark Ingram, Alabama–Ingram had a fine game against LSU, gaining 144 yards on 22 carries, though without a score.  On the year, he has 1,148 yards and 8 touchdowns and is averaging 6.6 yards per carry.  He is on pace to have 1,658 yards  and 12 touchdowns by the time the Heisman vote is due.  His remaining games are against Mississippi State, Chattanooga, Auburn and Florida.  As important as the last two matchups are in the race–and they should be huge–it is equally important that he pad his numbers in the next two games against weaker competition so that his overall stat line looks better at the end of the season (especially in the touchdown category).  Assuming Ingram plays well the rest of the way, I think his Heisman chances will hinge on the strength of support that exists for Tebow’s candidacy.  A strong Tebow candidacy could sap support for Ingram outside the South (while weakening McCoy in that region), but a weak Tebow would give Ingram a better chance of beating out or cutting into McCoy’s strength in regions like the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and West (keeping in mind that Ingram should get good support in the Midwest from which he hails).

3. Tim Tebow, Florida–Tebow had a solid game against Vanderbilt, throwing for 208 yards on 15 of 20 passing (with a touchdown) and rushing for 27 yards and a score on 16 carries.  On the year, he now has 1,531 passing yards, 11 touchdown passes, 4 interceptions and is completing 66 percent of his passes.  He has also rushed for 578 yards and 9 touchdowns.  He is on pace to have 2,211 passing yards, 16 touchdown passes, 6 interceptions, 834 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns by the time the Heisman vote is due.  At this point, Tebow needs to finish especially strong–I’m talking games with multiple touchdown passes and runs–with all of it culminating in a mega-performance against Alabama (while Ingram falters against the Gators) to have a shot to win.

If the vote were held today

1. Mark Ingram

2. Colt McCoy

3. Tim Tebow

4. Case Keenum

5. Jimmy Clausen

6. CJ Spiller

7. Eric Berry

8. Ndamukong Suh

9. Toby Gerhart

10. Kellen Moore

Why not more love for Clemson’s, CJ Spiller. He is the most explosive player in college football and this year is the most outstanding. He is on pace to set the NCAA all time record for all purpose yardage. If Clemson wins out and wins the ACC does he have a shot?

RWV beat me to it, what about Spiller?

CJ Spiller is BY FAR…the best player in College Football right now.

I can see the logic in the “if the vote were held today” rankings, but I think if Clemson keeps winning (yeah, this already sounds like a long shot) with the same productivity from Spiller, then he’s at least in the top 5, if not higher.

This just in, N.Y.C.: The Heisman committee has decided to pick two top players for awards, which will be the 1) Heisman, and the 2) H”eyes”man. Who do you think is favored for the latter? Signed, B. Spikes

Suh is the best player in college football this year. The Heisman has become the best QB award. How many times do you see a DT take over a game? Never…Suh is one in a million yet the media touts the overrated Tebows and McCoys of the world. Good job, voters.

If you have watched any College Football this tell me who has played better than Mark Ingram. All this Colt McCoy love makes me sick. Look at what Ingram has done and WHO he’s done it against. By far Ingram has been the best player in America week in and week out.

After last night, there should be no doubt: Mark Ingram needs to win the Heisman. Tebow should never have been on anyone’s Heisman lists, Tebow is not worthy of any awards this year. Two years ago, sure, he deserved it. But he has been riding that high since ’07 and he does not have the stats to back up anyone picking him. Hell, last night during the Bama/MSU game, they put two QB’s stats side-by-side, and didn’t tell who the two were. The QB with the worse stats: Tim Tebow. The better stats QB? Greg McElroy.
