The Heisman Trophy Trust announced today that ballots were distributed to the 926 electors who will vote for the 2009 Heisman Memorial Trophy winner.
The Heisman Memorial Trophy has been presented annually since 1935 to the most outstanding collegiate football player in the United States. This year three previous Heisman winners will be recognized: Billy Cannon (Louisiana State, 1959) on the 50th Anniversary of his award, Doug Flutie (Boston College, 1984) on the 25th Anniversary of his award and Ron Dayne (Wisconsin, 1999) on his 10th anniversary.
This year the voting concludes on Monday, December 7th and the winner will be announced on Saturday, December 12 during a live one-hour special sponsored by Nissan on ESPN from The Nokia Theatre in Times Square. Electors have had the choice to use either online or paper ballots since 2002. For the first time in Heisman history, electors will exclusively use an online voting balloting system administered by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche, LLP. The firm will also tabulate and certify the final result.
The 2009 Heisman electorate is comprised of 926 voters, which consists of the 55 living Heisman Trophy winners, 870 media members from six regions across the country and one overall fan vote, sponsored by Nissan. Fans can vote once a day until December 7 for their top player at www.TheHeismanVote.com. The results of this fan vote will be counted as one vote in the official Heisman tabulation.
