Colt McCoy might have made his Heisman statement with a huge game against Texas A&M tonight.

The senior quarterback threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns and added another 173 rushing yards and a score (a 65-yarder).

The ball is now in Mark Ingram’s court.  Can he return serve?

All eyes on Alabama-Auburn tomorrow.

WOW!! The question is, will Mark Ingram be able to even rush for as many yards as Colt just did?! 175 yards is a huge day for a tail back, let alone a quarterback who also through for 300+ yards and 4 touchdowns!

  2. Pete on November 26, 2009 10:16 pm

After tonight’s performance by Colt McCoy I don’t think Mark Ingram is even in the running for the Heisman. Colt played two positions tonight, running back and quarterback and played both positions as well as Ingram or Tebow on one of their really good nights. This performance should clearly put McCoy at the forefront of the Heisman standings.

Almost a done deal now without anything crazy happening.

At this point it may come down to how long the voters hold onto their ballots.

  5. Roby on November 27, 2009 6:27 am

It’s over. Watch. You are gonna see the biggest voting swing ever. McCoy is going to have 10 first place votes in the preliminary poll you run.

  6. John on November 27, 2009 7:39 am

Against the 100-ranked total defense?! Spare me.

  7. Roby on November 27, 2009 8:19 am

Nobody is gonna care how bad A&M’s defense is. Nobody is gonna care that they refused to tackle/cover any Longhorn. The only thing anyone is going to see is his stat line and a “Heisman performance.”

(McCoy was fortunate, as he almost threw 2 absolutely terrible interceptions. A&M just didn’t hold onto the ball)

  8. riverboat on November 27, 2009 8:25 am

ummm i guess people are going to stop saying texas has the best defense in the nation? giving up 39 points to texas a&m team? jesus. can’t wait till colt plays against a sec team like florida or alabama. hoping florida tho. bama might dissapoint.

  9. Texas Fan on November 27, 2009 9:14 am

An SEC team that needed gifts from the refs to beat mighty Miss St, Tennessee, and Arkansas? Yeah, I’m sure Texas is terrified.

  10. Jay on November 27, 2009 9:15 am

It’s not like Florida or Alabama did not struggle against weaker teams. Please. This was a huge in-state rivalry game away from Austin. Colt and Texas showed that they can take a punch. Don’t sleep on them just yet.

Nobody is saying that Ingram, Tebow, Keenum, Gerhart, etc… are having BAD seasons, it’s just that the all-around best Heisman-esque player this year is Colt McCoy. Tebow’s already got one, Ingram’s only soph, and Keenum is in a pinball offense. Based on this year alone, McCoy is a great & accurate passer, great runner, great leader, great winner, and is the best 2-minute drill QB in the game – but all those would apply to his career too. Add in career win totals (all-time most), career completion percentage (highest ever for season & career) legendary NCAA aura & , week-in week-out entertainment value, and last year’s Heisman & BCS injustice, and you’ll see Colt win it this year.

  12. starkweather on November 27, 2009 12:26 pm

McCoy is a very accurate passer but the arm strength is going to leave him on the bench (at best) in the pros. It’s worth noting that Houston doesn’t play the run & shoot anymore and that the “pinball offense” they play is based more on Keenum’s skills as a passer (he’s pretty close to McCoy in completion percentage and ranks higher in passer rating) than on any overriding philosophy of passing all the time. I think the main thing McCoy has over Keenum is that Longhorn on his helmet. R.I.P. to my futile Heisman campaigns for Bernard Pierce and Ryan Mathews as both have seen their teams fall by the wayside while nursing injuries on the sidelines. Can Toby Gerhart still win if he pastes Notre Dame for like 300 yds and 6 tds?

  13. riverboat on November 27, 2009 12:29 pm

texas will lose badly in the national championship (that’s if they beat nebraska). and just like how ohio state had no business being there two years in a row, so will texas prove that a big 12 team did not deserve to be there either.

  14. Geoff on November 27, 2009 1:41 pm

riverboat: How does an undefeated traditional powerhouse team with a Heisman-worthy QB not deserve to go to the National Championship? People said the same thing in 2005 when Texas had “no chance” of beating “the best team of all time” in USC – and look how that turned out.

Even for an arrogant and clearly biased individual such as yourself…you’re reaalll stupid.

  15. Geoff on November 27, 2009 1:48 pm

starkweather: Don’t confuse having an offense predicated on short passes and zone reads with a QB that doesn’t have arm strength. Colt McCoy is 6’3 and 215 lb. and the kid has an arm on him. Now sure, he’s no John Elway in terms of arm strength, but you don’t become an NCAA record setting QB on a team like Texas because you have a weak arm…

  16. Anonymous on November 27, 2009 4:02 pm

Ingram against horrid arch-rival: 16 rushes for 32 yards and zero TDs. Man that SEC sure is tough.

“texas will lose badly in the national championship (that’s if they beat nebraska). and just like how ohio state had no business being there two years in a row, so will texas prove that a big 12 team did not deserve to be there either.”

Did you see Alabama today against a terrible Auburn team? Perhaps it’s the SEC that doesn’t deserve a team in the MNC game.

  18. SEC_fan on November 27, 2009 4:09 pm

Ingram probably lost the Heisman today. It wasn’t so much his statistics as much as the fact that Saban had him on the bench during crunch time. You can’t win the Heisman when you aren’t even the best back on your own team…

  19. Geoff on November 27, 2009 4:10 pm

…and how about when Ingram had 2 chances to get 1 yard and couldn’t get it!! They had to turn the ball over…

“…and how about when Ingram had 2 chances to get 1 yard and couldn’t get it!! They had to turn the ball over…”

[eyeroll]That’s because SEC defenses are so good.[eyeroll]

geoff just hear me out, florida will dominate texas. 35-9 mccoy throws 3 interceptions no td’s scored for texas, all fg’s

“geoff just hear me out, florida will dominate texas. 35-9 mccoy throws 3 interceptions no td’s scored for texas, all fg’s”

Yes, because Florida’s offense and defense were so great against horrid unranked teams like Tennessee, Miss St, and LSU. Oh wait…

  23. Anonymous on November 27, 2009 6:02 pm

Riverboat…………..step away from the keyboard and take another puff on your pipe because I think you are losing your fing mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Truth on November 27, 2009 6:37 pm

As an SEC fan I just wanted to say that Colt played a great game and barring a total melt down against Nebraska or some UNBELIEVABLE game from someone else, Colt is deserving of the Heisman and Texas is worthy to play in the MNC.

  25. Shane on November 27, 2009 7:47 pm

As a Gator fan, I’d prefer Colt McCoy to win. Seems like winning the Heisman is a curse when it comes to performance in that season’s BCS CG.

Having said that, it seems like the strength of his candidacy is based primarily on: a) mediocre competition within the Heisman field and b) stellar performances against two teams at the end of the season, UCF and T A&M. He was horrible against Texas’ MAIN RIVAL, Oklahoma. If not for his pick six-saving tackle after a 4th quarter INT, Oklahoma would have taken the lead and probably won the game.

  26. Shane on November 27, 2009 7:52 pm

If Tennessee, Miss St and LSU are considered “horrid” and Auburn is considered “terrible”, I’d be interested what you think about the Texas schedule… lol

Geoff, you also left off punter. Colt also punted for 33yds to put the ball inside the TAMU 10yd line (8ydline).

Recent BCS trends puts this in category of “Colt’s Heisman to lose” category.

** The last time a NON-BCS team won the Heisman was Ty Detmer (BYU) in 1990.

    Gehart??
** Since the BCS was instituted, only ONE person has won the Heisman that did NOT play in a BCS bowl game that year. Guess who? Ricky Williams (1998). Texas went to the 1999 Cotton Bowl.

** Since the BCS was instituted, only THREE players have won the Heisman that did NOT play in the MNC game that same year. (Carson Palmer, Ron Dayne, & R.Williams)

Odds say it comes Colt, Tebow, Ingram. Of the three, Colt is the clear winner.

  28. Batman on November 28, 2009 8:00 am

The voters will vote as they will vote. Alabama proved this weekend they could win in a crutial game without Ingram doing anything – not sure the same could be said about Texas & McCoy. (what is the purpose of the Heisman award again?)All the pundants claim McCoy will be ineffective at the next level – same thing was said about Joe Montana fresh out of Notre Dame. Time will tell, but a winner is always a winner!

  29. riverboat on November 28, 2009 9:09 am

yobel you forgot to include tebow who in 2007 won the heisman without going to a bcs bowl or the championship game obviously

  30. Anonymous on November 28, 2009 3:47 pm
