The Alabama Heisman curse seems to be rearing its ugly head.
Mark Ingram’s hopes for the trophy took a major hit today, as he rushed for just 32 yards on 16 carries against Auburn. The Tide pulled out the game, but he was a complete non-factor in the dramatic win and now he might even be hurt heading into the SEC title game.
It will take a huge performance against Florida combined with a Colt McCoy tank against Nebraska for Ingram to jump back on top of this contest. And even then, I think we are looking at a squeaker of a race.
As it now stands, McCoy is the strong favorite to capture the 2009 Heisman Trophy.

Agree McCoy clear favorite. Only other alternative is Tebow if he can perform strongly against FSU and Alabama.
SEC overrated.
How does this mean the SEC is overrated? Rivalry game at home against a very good Auburn offense. I’ll bet if Alabama won by a lot you would have said the same thing.
Maybe next year Ingram, Colt McCoy showed on national TV last night why he is the best college football player of 2009.
But but Texas doesn’t deserve to be in the MNC because they played their arch-rival close at their home. Oh, that excuse only works for the SEC I guess.
I’m a Bama man but Mckiy shined and Ingram did not. We waited 100+ years for a Heisman, one more won’t kill us.
No SEC fans on this page said that Texas doesn’t deserve to play in the MNC game if they win next week. I’m a big SEC fan and I believe they deserve to play in it if they win next week. I also believe Colt is a deserving Heisman winner….if he plays reasonably well next week also.
But, I’ll be very interested to see how he does in the MNC game against a legit D.
I think the MNC barb wasn’t so much directed at SEC schools as some of the wannabe mid-major contenders who have been whining because they want TCU to go to MNC instead of Texas. Since Texas refuses to lose a close win is taken as proof that Texas doesn’t deserve to go.
Oh…I get it, and in that case I can’t see how on earth TCU should play ahead of Texas. As an SEC fan and unbiased between TCU and Texas, I think Texas would have a better case than TCU even if they had one loss. I know this is an off year for the BIG 12, but its still the BIG 12.
Next week will be key…I think as long as McCoy doesn’t suck next week, the Heisman is his. I’d say if he can get 2+ touchdowns and have no turnovers the award is his.
I find it strange that Mark Ingram has one down performance in one of the biggest rivalry games in college football(with a Auburn linebacker spying him the entire game)and all of a sudden every one wants off the ship, yet Colt McCoy was down for 4 weeks straight and then has a good rivalry game against a Texas A&M team that has absolutely NO defense and everyone wants on the McCoy lifeboat. C’MON SON!!!! WTF.
It is sad he got hurt in the first quarter.
If the AU and A&M games had occured during the first few weeks of the season, Ingram would still be in the lead.
It sucks how the timing of one bad game can effect the Heisman race. Likewise, McCoy’s only real game where he can be said to be the sole reason for a win, happened at the right time for him.
But overall, taking all the games as a whole, I think Ingram is the most outstanding player. How can you fault someone for being hurt? This was his first bad game all year. McCoy stunk against unranked OU and OSU, throwing something like 290 yds between both games.
I agree with anonymous. A&M has no defense. They gave up 47 points against an Arkansas team that Ingram ran all over, and they also gave up 60+ points to OU and KSU. Yet, McCoy managed to throw up 49 and suddenly he is the darling of all the Heisman voters.
Since when did the Heisman come down to one game?
Dartagnan,
You’re funny. Ingram didn’t get until late in this game and wasn’t even the best back on his own team. He’s failed to reach 100 yards several times this year. Look at McCoys games, he’s really only had one bad game, OU. The knock on McCoy early was his slow starts but always ended up with good numbers.
Anonymous – “I find it strange that Mark Ingram has one down performance”
Dartagnan – “This was his first bad game all year.” “They gave up 47 points against an Arkansas team that Ingram ran all over…”
This is pure SEC BS. This is Ingram’s 4th sub-100 game. In the Arkansas game, he only had 50yds and 2.9 y/c. Give me a freakin break… 1400 yds wouldn’t be Heisman type numbers in a 10 game season much less in a 12 game season. He has had a very good sophomore season and should be on the early watch next season but those are NOT Heisman numbers this season.
Dartagnan, get off Ingrams jock. In one of the biggest games of the year he choked. He had 2 chances to get a yard and didnt. Colt McCoy has no running game backing him up. Every team knows he’s the man, and he’s going to pass. He had more rushing yards in his big rivalry game than Ingram usually has, not to mention 300 + yards in the air. If McCoy had a average running back to take the pressure off, he’d have even better numbers. Not to mention Ingram usually plays the whole game, McCoy is taken out after the third quarter when Texas is up.
Colt also punted once to put the ball inside the Texas A&M 10 yd line (at 8ydline). Ingram couldnt rise to the occasion with his primary expectation – rushing. This week, Colt excelled at passing (300+yds), rushing (175yds) and punting. Colt is clearly the MVP on one of the best teams in the country. Ingram wasnt even the best rusher on his team this week.

Also, a correction to a statement that I made earlier: this is Ingram’s 5th sub-100 game; hardly, Heisman worthy numbers.
P.S. Ingram has 5 games with less than 100 yards. He and McCoy have the same number of games with 175 yards or more rushing with 1. Everyone can talk about how one game shouldn’t matter, but when its against your rival national spotlight and your playing for bragging rights and national championship implications, you think if you were the best player you would be able to show up, no matter what the situation. Also, people keep bringing up “It was against a bad Texas A&M team” for why McCoy did what he did. However, Auburns rushing defense is ranked 88th in the country, A&M’s is ranked 76th. I think SEC and Big 12 fans can all come together and agree on 1 thing, the PAC 10 is less deserving of an automatic than the WAC.
I bet Dartagnan is the guy they showed on tv wearing the toilet paper rolls tied to a box of tide detergent.
Before this weeks games, both Ingram and McCoy both had performances that were less than Heisman quality. Ingram was slightly ahead of McCoy, but it would come down to the final two games – both men had two games left (1) against an in-state rival in an unfriendly environment and (2) a conf championship game. Despite really good excuses, etc. for earlier in the year, it has come down to these two games. McCoy clearly performed better in round 1 and this time of the year, timing is everything. Next Saturday, Ingram goes first and probably needs a memory leaving performance to remain in the fight. However, at this point, McCoy can probably turn in an average performance against Nebraska and take home the prize. If both Texas and Alabama lose, then enter Tebow for his 2nd.
== This is pure SEC BS. This is Ingram’s 4th sub-100 game. In the Arkansas game, he only had 50yds and 2.9 y/c.
Just because you have a sub-100yd game doesn’t mean you had a bad game. In one of those games he ran only 8 times but averaged 11.4 yds per carry, and in all four of those games he averaged 5.6 yds a carry. He is also sharing playing time with Richardson, a five-star freshman. Ad Arkansas was an easy win, with big TD plays coming from Richardson and GMAC, so there was no need to run Ingram that much. Auburn was really the only bad game he has had, and it is no surprised he got injured early.
== Give me a freakin break… 1400 yds wouldn’t be Heisman type numbers in a 10 game season much less in a 12 game season.
It isn’t about numbers alone. Ingram is responsible for single-handedli winning several games for Alabama. McCoy has been riding on the Texas defense through the season. Only against A&M can it be said he was the sole reason they won.
People have been dying for a reason all year to give the trophy to McCoy, and now they will use this one game as their excuse.
Again it is all about timing. If these were the first games of the season instead of the last games, Ingram would be the strong favorite again.
Seriously, does anyone really think if this last game was against Oklahoma and McCoy threw 127 yds while relying on the Defense to save his ass, that he would be looked as as a Heisman winner?
And if the last game was Alabama vs. South Carolina, where Ingram rushes for 247 yds to provide virtually all of the Bama offense, that people would be pointing to his injury induced performance during the AU game?
== P.S. Ingram has 5 games with less than 100 yards.
Do you think the Heisman experts didn’t know this before the AU game, when he was the favorite over McCoy? When you’re sharing playing time with someone like Trent Richardson, you’re naturally not going to get as many carries as someone who is the primary rusher for another team.
There are 15 others who have had more carries than Ingram, and even with his bad performance yesterday, he still leads the all of them in yds per carry, averaging 6.5
The amazing thing about Ingram is how he has been resonsible for so much in these wins, even though he hasn’t played as much as others.
== Everyone can talk about how one game shouldn’t matter, but when its against your rival national spotlight and your playing for bragging rights and national championship implications, you think if you were the best player you would be able to show up, no matter what the situation.
Again, Ingram was up against pure hatred from the AU defense. AU had eight stacked in the box and everyone was gunning in Ingram’s direction whether he had the ball or not. They did not want him to win the Heisman, and they hoped they could stick that in our faces all year after losing. They were also punting the ball out of bounds just because they did not want Arenas to break the NCAA record in punt returns.
They made some very risky moves and it paid off in the first quarter, but after that Bama pretty much shut them down. I mean you can only succeed with a trick reverse play, full blitzes with 8 men, and a sneak onsides kick so many times.
Now you seem to think Texas had a similar opponent just because it was a state rival. But A&M had no defense to put up against McCoy. None. A&M’s offense was churning well, but that doesn’t mean their defense challenged McCoy. Hell to give you an idea just how cupcake A&M’s defense is, Arkansas put up 47 points against A&M and OU and KSU both threw up more than 60. So we’re supposed to sit in awe because McCoy managed to manufacture 49? This was no surprise.
If you want to use a real rivalry comparison, then use teh Ou game where Texas had 27 yds total offense at halftime and McCoy finished the game with 120 yds and an INT. The TExas defense saved his butt, and if Bradford wasn’t hurt, OU would have stomped them to bits.
Now the AU Bama game… there is a reason they call it the Iron Bowl. It is almost always a defensive battle. It isn’t a passing marathon like Texas and other Big 12 teams are used to.
== Also, people keep bringing up “It was against a bad Texas A&M team” for why McCoy did what he did.
Well, yes, it was. At least bad defensively, which is what matters. Texas A&M is ranked 104th in scoring defense. They allow their opponents to score an average of 32 points per game. So why is everyone shocked that they gave up 49 on thursday?
== Auburns rushing defense is ranked 88th in the country, A&M’s is ranked 76th.
Auburn never focused so much on the run as they did against Bama. Again they went in the game with nothing to lose, they were already expected to get thumped so they threw every trick in the book at them, including the kitchen sink. No huddle offenses, trick reverese plays, blitzing everyone and his dog, sneak onsides kick. They did exactly what Utah did last year and that is the only reason they managed to jump to a two score lead.
Dartagnan, with much respect to Mark Ingram, Ingram has relied on Alabama defense as much as Colt has relied on Texas defense. For example, do you remember Alabama v. Tennessee? Ingram’s Heisman chance would have been over if not for Cody’s TWO blocked FGs. Ingram FUMBLED in his own territory to give Tennessee a chance to beat Alabama. Against Auburn, Alabama defense “saved Ingram’s ass” by pulling out a win. If Alabama loses, Ingram is totally out of the Heisman race altogether. Ingram should thank his defense which gave him to at least redeem himself next week against Florida.
== In one of the biggest games of the year he choked. He had 2 chances to get a yard and didnt.
Apparently, no one here watched the game. His three yard runs were usually after initial contact behind the line. The AU defense was swarming at him, operating under the assumption he would get the ball on every play.
I don’t care how great a pitcher is, if the hitter can guess fastball at the right time, it is probably going to be hit. The AU defense guessed run at the right times, and GMAC used that to his advantage because while they were sending everyone and their dog after Ingram on every play, he was able to find open receivers.
Dartagnan… BS, numbers DO matter. You cant be the best player in the country with mediocre numbers. In 2009, Ingram only has 1429 rushing yards in 12 games with only 12 TDs!! Those are NOT Heisman numbers.
Larry Johnson rushed for over 2000 yds at Penn St and finished only 3rd in the Heisman voting. Ingram might hit 1600 with a monster game against FL but will not come close to 1700yds.
Probably the weakest RB in decades to get the Heisman was Reggie Bush with only 1740yds but he also had 8.7 yds/carry, 840 receiving yds and 20tds. I think in retrospect, most people will agree that Vince Young should have won the award that year but that is a different argument.
In the BCS era, the other RBs that won are Ron Dayne and Ricky Williams.
Ron Dayne rushed for 1834 yds and 19tds w/ 6739 career rushing yds and 2 BCS MVPs. Even though Daynes award was mostly a career award, his season was still far and away better than Ingram’s season.
Ricky Williams rushed for 2397 yds, 307 receiving yds, 30 tds and 6279 career rushing yds; not even a close comparison.
Please give me an example of a RB that had as poor stats as Ingram that won the Heisman award?
30 yards rushing is 30 yards rushing. A bad game is a bad game. This is why QBs won the Heisman Trophy last 7-8 years. Voters will excuse QBs for having an “off night” as long as they win. QBs can take one or two bad games b/c “they get their hands on the football every snap of every game.” They are viewed as “leaders” while RBs and WRs are viewed as “skill players” at QB’s disposal.
Yobel,
== You cant be the best player in the country with mediocre numbers.
Agreed, but 6.5 yds per carry, 1400 yds, and being responsible for wins against several ranked teams, is hardly mediocre. And McCoy is ranked behind at least a dozen other QBs in various categories.
== In 2009, Ingram only has 1429 rushing yards in 12 games with only 12 TDs!! Those are NOT Heisman numbers.
Says who?
You’re clearly one of those guys who puts too much emphasis on numbers, and pays no attention to the finer details, such as schedule strength, the impact a player has on a win, etc.
Again, why was Ingram leading the race at all with less than 1400 yds rushing and only two games left? Obviously what you say isn’t true.
Simply put, you can’t expect someone to be able to rush for huge gains when an opposing defense has decided to focus strictly on the runner. Ingram was hit behind the line of scrimmage every time he touched the ball, usually by multiple players. It is hard to expect him to be superman in those situations, especially when the guy he is fighting against (McCoy,) simply has to throw up a few TDs against one of the worst passing defenses in football.
Now when the Defense stacks up against the pass, a player like McCoy has the option to run, which usually means long scampers. Any defense can stop the run if they want to gamble and blitz everyone all the time. AU gambled by doing that and they lost because of it. But their main goal was to stop Ingram from winning the Heisman, and they probably succeeded because big names and big numbers are usually all most people pay attention to.
People were dying for a reason to give it to McCoy, who has been their darling for four years now. Now he will get it. But he is hardly the most outstanding player in football.
Again, 127 yds and an INT against unranked OU! That is when you expect a clutch Heisman guy to rise to the challenge, and McCoy faltered big time. And he wasn’t injured.
After OU beats OSU, Texas will not have beaten a SINGLE ranked team. Alabama will have beaten anywhere between 4-5 ranked teams, depending on how the final polls turn out.
==30 yards rushing is 30 yards rushing.
And 127yds passing and an INT is still 127yds passing and an INT. The only time McCoy was really challenged this year, he fell flat on his face. The rest of the season has been against some of the worst Big 12 teams in history. Rivalries only mean something if the other team has a decent defense. A&M is one of the worst in the game, and it showed. McCoy took full advantage of it.
== A bad game is a bad game.
Exactly.
== Voters will excuse QBs for having an “off night” as long as they win.
Even if they win because they have a stellar defense causing mutiple tunrovers for them? I would think they’d only be forgiven for having a bad night if they ended up being the REASON for a win. McCoy was not the reason OU lost to Texas.
So it is a double-standard.
Dartagnan – “Again, Ingram was up against pure hatred from the AU defense. AU had eight stacked in the box and everyone was gunning in Ingram’s direction whether he had the ball or not. They did not want him to win the Heisman, and they hoped they could stick that in our faces all year after losing.”
“Auburn never focused so much on the run as they did against Bama.”
“Simply put, you can’t expect someone to be able to rush for huge gains when an opposing defense has decided to focus strictly on the runner.”
Dartagnan… there you go, that’s the difference right there hoss! Do you think other Heisman RBs didn’t come against the exact same situation? Do you think Ricky Williams, Eddie George, Rashaan Salaam, Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, Billy Sims, Earl Campbell and all the others didn’t have teams stack the box to stop them?!?! LOL In situations like that, they produced or at least the threat of producing caused teams to play that way. Ingram DIDN’T rise to the occasion and, matter of fact, Richardson was the better bama back in the game regardless of supposed injury.
This year, Ingram is an above average RB on a good team, that doesn’t make him a Heisman good.
Again, you still cant answer the question, when was the last time that a RB won the Heisman with such poor numbers?
== Dartagnan, with much respect to Mark Ingram, Ingram has relied on Alabama defense as much as Colt has relied on Texas defense.
Absolute nonsense.
== For example, do you remember Alabama v. Tennessee? Ingram’s Heisman chance would have been over if not for Cody’s TWO blocked FGs.
So you’re saying Heisman winners always come from undefeated teams?
== Ingram FUMBLED in his own territory to give Tennessee a chance to beat Alabama.
Sure, but I think that was the only T/O he has had all year, and he averaged nearly 6 yds a carry in that game. If they had given him the ball more it wouldn’t have been a close game at all. I remember pulling my hair out during that game because Ingram would rush the team all the way down into the red zone and then Saban would try to build GMAC’s confidence by passing. Several times they went three and out as soon as they got within striking distance. That isn’t Ingram’s fault. The Defense bailed out Saban’s poor play calling.
== Against Auburn, Alabama defense “saved Ingram’s ass” by pulling out a win.
Uh, it was the offense that pulled out the win, not the Defense. The defense gave up 21 points remember?
== If Alabama loses, Ingram is totally out of the Heisman race altogether.
Says who? I think this is more true for QBs than RBs. Which is why McCoy would be up shit creek without Texas’s defense. McCoy gave OU every opportunity to win that game. Ingram has just one fumble to note.
== Ingram should thank his defense which gave him to at least redeem himself next week against Florida
I don’t think he will play. He injured his arm pretty badly. You guys don’t fully appreciate the dirty plays that go on in the Iron Bowl. AU set out to stop Ingram at all costs. Did you notice Richardson performed better? That is because when Ingram was in, the defense was changed and all the LBs were told to blitz him when the ball was snapped. My Brother-in Law plays for AU, so I have some inside knowledge.
OH… I forgot. I am talking measurable (stats) because that is the best way to compare like athletes and I am giving Ingram credit by do that. If you want to count immeasurable (value to team), then Ingram shouldn’t even be in the conversation of former Heisman RBs. Ingram’s value wasn’t very high this week since he was CLEARLY replaced by the more effective Richardson.
==Again, you still cant answer the question, when was the last time that a RB won the Heisman with such poor numbers?
And you still have not answered the question, why should this matter? There won’t be a Heisman winner with only 1500 rushing yds…. until there is one.
What you have to do is prove that there CAN’T be one. And again, you have not addressed the fact that Ingram was the leader for weeks, although you keep saying it can’t happen.
Dartagnan – “So you’re saying Heisman winners always come from undefeated teams?”
Are you now comparing Ingram to other Heisman winners on teams with defeats? And, you will not answer simple questions about comparisons to former Heisman winners? Wow…ok
Ingram has had more than one poor game. Your not benched when the game is on the line if you are the best player in the country.
== Against Auburn, Alabama defense “saved Ingram’s ass” by pulling out a win.
Uh, it was the offense that pulled out the win, not the Defense. The defense gave up 21 points remember?
First 14 points of that 21 points came during the first 5 minutes of the game. Remember?
== For example, do you remember Alabama v. Tennessee? Ingram’s Heisman chance would have been over if not for Cody’s TWO blocked FGs.
So you’re saying Heisman winners always come from undefeated teams?===
No, Heisman winners don’t “always” come from undefeated teams. But the perspective is important in the Heisman voting.
However, objectively thinking, if Ingram’s fumble led to Tennessee’s FG and Alabama is now 11-1, not 12-0. Do you think Ingram has a chance against Tebow, Geyhart, Colt, Spiller?
Remember Colt McCoy last year against Tech? Every media said Colt was a runaway Heisman winner heading into the game. After the loss, no one put Colt at the top anymore.
And, you should give OU defense some credit too; if you watched the game. As much as Auburn’s defense tried to stop Ingram, OU’s defense tried to stop McCoy from passing by dropping 8 in the coverage.
Btw, Colt was injured in the OU game too. So while you try to rationalize Ingram’s bad day, don’t be so biased. I admit that Colt had a bad day against OU. But as you said, Ingram just had a bad game in the late season. Sorry.
Dartagnan – “And you still have not answered the question, why should this matter? There won’t be a Heisman winner with only 1500 rushing yds…. until there is one. What you have to do is prove that there CAN’T be one. ”
So because a Heisman HASN’T won it with piss-poor stats, then that means it cant be done by your logic. Hahaha With that reasoning, I can pick a name out of a hat and argue they should win the award; well… it hasn’t been done before! Hahaha There wont be a place kicker Heisman winner… until there is one. LOL what a trip.
Dartagnan – “And again, you have not addressed the fact that Ingram was the leader for weeks, although you keep saying it can’t happen. ”
Since you don’t want to use stats, since of course you would lose any argument, you want to use immeasurable, subjective, improvable proof such as “Ingram was the leader for weeks. OMG… for weeks?! And not now… but “was” the leader for weeks. OK… I am trying to get into your logic now… the player in the country only has to be the leader more than one week (weeks) sometime in the past; not now but then.
It is a lot easier to use stats than some convoluted subjective qualification.
Gerhart is clearly the best player in the country. Watch when he puts up 200 yards and 4 TDs against Notre Dame. Too bad he plays for a small private school on the West Coast. He is at least the most consistent running back in the country. His only two games under 100 yards were in the 80s and 90s yards, he still scored, and were largely due to reduced number of carries. His lowest YPC this year in a game was 4.4. No way should Ingram even be a finalist if Gerhart isn’t…
The bype is that the Heisman goes to the best college football player – I do not think that is true anymore. If you look at the last few years – 10 or so, I would submit that the winner is actually the most celebrated offensive player on the most celebrated team, and that is NOT necessarily the best overall player.
Im tired of people bringing up McCoy’s slow start to the season without understanding the circumstances behind it. It seems that no one remembers, or knows, that Greg Davis and Mack Brown completely changed Texas’ offense following the OU game, and if memory serves me right Colt McCoy has been outstanding ever since.
STATS DON’T MEAN EVERYTHING!!!!!
YES, McCoy had a “slow start”…for McCoy…not for a normal QB…the Heisman is more about how you perform and how your performances are perceived by the Heisman voters…not whether a player has 3 more yards per carry or any other bullshit stats you all come up with…
Any Ingram supporter here should quit the stats talk…Ingram is extremely sub-par as a running back for the Heisman award…period, there is no justifying 5 sub-100 yard games for a Heisman winning RB.
The fact of the matter is Ingram was in the hunt because of how he played on an undefeated team. He played to win and he got the yards when ‘Bama needed them most. He is ‘Bama’s only marquee player. However, he failed miserably against Auburn, and unfortunately (and we ALL know this by now) – games later in the year mean more…so sorry Ingram, Colt may have had a down game against OU, but it was earlier in the year.
Colt has done far more than Ingram to make up for his less-than-stellar games, but unfortunately, Ingram has not. And if you are nuts about stats, then the stats clearly support this…and I’m sorry, you need more than a high YPC stat to win the Heisman people…get real.
Ingram’s bad game (Auburn): 16 rushes for 30 yards.
Colt’s bad game (Oklahoma): 14 rushes for 33 yards.
I really think the Ingram supporters are underestimating just HOW BAD he was yesterday. A heisman caliber running back should not be on the bench when his team is trailing in the 4th quarter of a rivalry game.
Everyone keeps saying that Ingram has led his team to victory many times but, that only happened once, against South Carolina, and the fact that Auburn was solely trying to stop Ingram……………….who do you think that defenses planning for Texas are trying to stop, is it their running game? I don’t think thats a valid excuse, every team tries to take out a team’s heisman candidate, it just so happens that Colt came through anyway.
Wow. I have never seen someone blindly defend a player so staunchly. I do respect the loyalty though. Bottom line, it’s not about having one bad game, it is about being on the bench while a freshman was taking his carries in crunch time. Halfway through the second quarter, Ingram had 7 carries for 8 yards. His replacement was running more effectively than Ingram was. If you aren’t the best player on the field, or even on your team, how can you be called the best player in the country?
It doesn’t matter what Ingram did anyway, McCoy locked it up as we were waking up from our turkey comas. Stop whining.
Go Gators.
I love the description of Stanford as a “small private school on the West Coast.” I realize they may not be a power in football right now but Stanford has one of the largest endowments of any school in the world and an absolutely massive athletics budget to match. I’d ride with Gerhart as the better player out of the three but don’t be surprised by how much the hype turns on Tebow’s performance next week. Gators by 20, let’s see what’s up after that
Four that will definitely get invites:
Ingram
McCoy
Tebow
Gerhart
McCoy has a lot of momentum, but he’s played against the weakest defenses by far. He will face his 2nd top 50 pass defense in Nebraska. Texas needed 5 Oklahoma turnovers to overcome McCoy’s poor performance against the only other top 50 pass defense he faced. McCoy must beat Nebraska to prove he can at least win one conference championship during his career.
Regarding Ingram and Tebow, the one that wins next week will be a front runner, while the other will take a back seat.
I can’t imagine a scenario where Gerhart wins. He’s on an 8-4 team that rarely won close games and will not play again before the voting. The three other top candidates play on undefeated teams, will all play in conference championship games, and are vying for a national championship.
I watched the Alabama-Auburn game. You should have titled this post “Ingram Stinks”.
Lmfao how many full games did mccoy play this year . do your homework idiots . he sat out most of the 2nd half in 7 games . brown could have left him in and padded those numbers. Like stoops did with bradford last year .So if mccoy played all full games this would not even be a debate .
I did the homework. No matter your interpretation, there is no way McCoy sat out “most of the 2nd half” in seven games.
He sat out the fourth quarter of four games (ULM, UTEP, Mizzou, Baylor) and played most, if not all, of the third quarter in three of those games. UTEP is the only game where I can see he sat out most (not all) of the third quarter.
I’m not accusing Texas of trying to “pad” his stats, just setting the record straight.
Mac -
Here are the quarter totals for McCoy:
La-Monroe 3.0 quarters
Wyoming 3.5
Texas Tech 3.7
UTEP 2.4
Colorado 3.5
Oklahoma 4.0
Missouri 3.0
Ok St 3.1
UCF 4.0
Baylor 3.0
Kansas 3.5
TAMU 4.0
McCoy plays more minutes in blowout games than any major candidate. Against Florida’s three weakest opponents Tebow played 1.5, 2.1 and 2.4 quarters. Had Tebow played as long as McCoy had against such opponents Tebow would have over 400 more yards and 5 more TDs.
The BCS computer rankings tell us that the Big 12 is the 5th best conference this year and that McCoy has faced the worst pass defenses of any of the candidates.
ingram shouldnt even be considered. gerhart tebow or mccoy please. i think they should give it to colt since tebow already has one
