Colt McCoy has often been compared to 1963 Heisman winner Roger ‘The Dodger’ Staubach. Based on what I remember of Staubach growing up, it seems an apt comparison, right on down to the jersey number.
So it’s only appropriate that Staubach and McCoy have become close over these past few years.
Four decades apart in age, they seldom talk about plays, players or what things were like back in Staubach’s day. Their bond is membership in the fraternity of quarterbacks who’ve come through under a white-hot spotlight, with similar playing styles.
For McCoy, being able to share ideas on leadership and to ask questions about what it takes to get a team to trust and follow has been invaluable. Staubach has helped keep him grounded despite his success and picked him up when things were tough – just one quarterback to another, advice from someone who’d been there.
“He wants me to be the best I can be,” McCoy told the AP. “How lucky am I to get that?”

So everyone said it should be one of the 3 QB’s at the start of the season. Hype has been constant and massive. But, come on look at the clip link below. No one works harder and carries his team more than Toby Gerhart:

McCoy stunk it up tonight… 3 INT and almost lost the game by miss managing the clock. No way he wins the Heisman!
Gerhart or Suh for the Heisman. Everyone else has stunk it up this week or last week.
McCoy continues to be the most overhyped, underperforming player in the country.
At what point do enough terrible games eliminate you from the Heisman race?
Here’s his highlights from tonight: 8 sacks for 50 yards lost, 20/36 for 184 yards, 0 touchdowns, 3 interceptions. Heisman? HEISMAN? Dude shouldn’t even win the O’Brien.
@Ingram?, you prove the exact opposite point that you’re trying to. Texas’ Oline is below average, and Suh and Nebraska showed that tonight. Is that McCoy’s fault? Should he have been able to find an open receiver when it was 3 on 7 in the secondary because NU only had to rush 4 to get pressure? And if you watched the game you saw that only one of those interceptions was a poor decision; one was tipped at the line, and the other was wrenched out of Buckner’s grip. Oh, and by the way, kudos on leaving out his rushing touchdown, you’re so sneaky its incredible.
McCoy was the most over hyped player this season by a landslide… I’m sure some will note how his last throw was perfect to leave one second on the clock.
Really, though, his stats haven’t been good overall and the only two good defenses he played, he was horrible. But yes he did play well against one of the worst defenses in the country, which is his ‘heisman moment’.
I think Ingram will be #1 and Gerhart will be #2 and both are deserving… though Gerhart was more consistent and I personally think should get it. Tebow should be in the top 3 with a solid performance tonight and strong close in stats. McCoy should just be happy if he gets invited to NY over Spiller, Moore, and Keenum, but he will because of his over hype image this year.
Hello Ingram?, let’s break down your post, shall we?
“McCoy continues to be the most overhyped, underperforming player in the country.”
Hmmm… Well I personally believe that winning the most games in FBS history denotes some type of talent worth hyping, as does going 25-1 in your last 26 games, maybe your not one of those people that likes the Ws so much. I guess we could then point out the fact that his 2008 season was statistically one of the best in history, with him breaking most of the passing records at Texas and leading his team in rushing. He also threw for 34 TDs and rushed for another 11. Apparently Ingram’s 15 rushing TDs are worth much more than Colt’s 45 total were last year. O wait, I forgot that each rushing TD equals 10 passing. So yes, you’re right, Colt deserves no hype, and he definitely underperforms much worse than Zac Lee, who threw a whopping 39 yards tonight (which incidentally is 9 more than Ingram had last week).
“At what point do enough terrible games eliminate you from the Heisman race?”
How many terrible games did Colt have this year? OU and NU are the only two that I can count, and he managed to win both and scored a touchdown in each, which is more than Ingram did against Auburn.
“Here’s his highlights from tonight: 8 sacks for 50 yards lost, 20/36 for 184 yards, 0 touchdowns, 3 interceptions.”
Psst, I think you got your highs and lows mixed up, because you totally left out his 30 yards rushing and his touchdown (hmmm… why does 30 yards rushing sound familiar?)
“Heisman? HEISMAN? Dude shouldn’t even win the O’Brien.”
Nice use of CAPITAL LETTERS! You sure showed us with your inane rambling! (next step, use exclamation points, they make your internet rants LOUDER!!!) SEE IT WORKS!!!
G’day.
I’m sorry, I was about to go to sleep until I saw your post, Paul. Really, you think Colt was more hyped than Tebow? I can abide people that use evidence to back up their belief that Tebow had a better season than Colt, but I can’t let this one slide. I really wish someone would have counted how many times ESPN mentioned Tebow and Colt this year so we would compare, but that didn’t happen. I can assure you though, Tebow would win in a landslide.
VY – I do think Tebow was very much over hyped at the beginning of the year, but this year there’s no comparsion to that of McCoy. Tebow had a lot of his name mentioned on his concussion, but most media picked apart his performances even when he did very well. For McCoy, it seemed that no matter how bad he did he was in the top 2 or 3, which makes no sense to me. The 2009 Heisman should go to the best player in 2009, which McCoy wasn’t. Stats and his key games make that pretty clear. Either way, I think it’s hard to argue that Gerhart should win, but Ingram probably will win with an awesome performance tonight.
Gerhart for Heisman. 200 yards/game against ranked opponents.
Eh, Paul, I’ll be honest, I think both running backs’ great stats are more of a product of their O-lines than their own skills. I’m not saying that they are not both good backs, but put Cody Johnson in at Stanford and I’m sure he would pick up roughly the same stats as Gerhart. I really don’t think Ingram had a great season, McCoy had as many rushing yards tonight in one of his worst games as Ingram did against Auburn, but his team is 13-0 and in the SEC so he deserves consideration. I still think Tebow was hyped more than McCoy, but I’ll admit when I’m biased. As it’s been stated before though, this season was Colt’s to win the trophy. He proved last year that he could compete even when facing an incredibly tough schedule, and all he had to do was have a good, not great, season this year to win it.
Gerhart’s the best of the bunch…see here

VY “you’re sure”…kiss my grits….GERHART’s a special runner. Even though he does have the best stats by far against the best aggregate competition…the reason he deserves it is his uniquely powerful running style that produces results and carries his team. Look at his reel VY.

Heisman voters who pick other than GERHART first are just plain stupid homers. Gerhart clearly deserves it.
minime, I’m not denying that Gerhart is a good back, I just think that his “uniquely powerful running style” is really not all that unique. I think that if Texas moved to a downhill rushing scheme, and started Cody Johnson, he would produce a similar highlight reel. Johnson has been stopped for a loss just once in his career and rushed for 3 touchdowns in his opening game even while slowed down by a hamstring injury. Again, I admit my biases, but I just feel that Stanford’s rush blocking has been underrated. I do think that he deserves Heisman consideration, but not a first place vote. It’s a good thing for you I don’t vote, but I would put Suh, McCoy, Gerhart, Tate, Jacqizz Rodgers.
