Awards, Awards, Awards

Colt McCoy picked up the Walter Camp, Maxwell and Davy O’Brien Awards, while Toby Gerhart won the Doak Walker (best running back) and Ndamukong Suh won the Lombardi, Nagurski and Outland Trophies.

Does this have any bearing on the Heisman race?  From an email:

HP, I’m wondering how can Ingram win the Heisman when he didn’t win the Maxwell Award or the Walter Camp Award (which McCoy did) or even the Doak Walker Award (which Gerhart did)? Doesn’t it seem hard to vote for someone who isnt even considered the best running back in the nation? Thanks, Josh

It used to be that winning the Maxwell or Camp awards portended a Heisman victory.  However, it could just as easily mean that voters want to make sure the other players don’t come away empty handed.   It’s a sign of appreciation for guys like McCoy and Gerhart.  If anything, I see Ingram being shut out of these awards as a good sign for his Heisman hopes.

I hope that isn’t the case for McCoy. He desreves the Heisman more than any one.

Hmm, I wonder how many past Heisman winners didn’t win their respective award in the college football awards? (seriously, any stat gurus?)

Ingram would be the first Heisman winning running back to not also win the Doak Walker. I think this portends well for Gehart’s Heisman hopes.

Seems a bit far fetched to me to assume that the voters of all these different awards are somehow acting in concert to reward McCoy Suh and Gerhart with consolation prizes while giving Ingram the Heisman. That may very well end up being the result, but I doubt it is an intentional act on the part of voters
