Urban Meyer is out at Florida, with the reason given being health concerns.

Obviously, this is going to have a huge impact, not only in the SEC, but in the recruiting and coaching worlds.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that there is probably more to this story than meets the eye.  I’ve got a feeling we may not have heard the last of Coach Meyer.

  1. This is totally shocking. It’s unfortunate for both Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong that they left or else they both would have been candidates, but I doubt they have anyone on the staff right now worth promoting to HC.

Florida can’t Ron Zook it again. He was handed a national championship caliber program after Spurrier left and he had three majorly mediocre years.

They have to go for someone big with a proven record, and they can since this is one of the best if not the best job in the nation. It’s certainly the best program if not the best job in the nation. You win in the SEC you play for the national championship unlike the Pac-10, Big East, or ACC. And the talent is here to be contending for national championships.

The first few names that pop to my mind are Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Dungy, Gruden and Shanahan.

  2. Carrol and Stoops are out. It would be a lateral move for both of them. It makes no sense for either to leave their respective schools.

I hadn’t thought of Dungy, but that would be a move I would love to see. I think he would be really great as a college coach.

I hope everything is ok with Meyer. I can’t imagine he had been considering this for a while. If he was, I think he would have told Charlie Strong to stick around.

  3. As a father with a son playing football, having a person like Dungy as coach would be a wonderful thing. Good for the young men; great for the University of Florida.

I feel bad for Coach Meyer and the young men in his charge; he was a class act.

  4. Weird story. Definitely more to come. I’ll be shocked if we don’t see Meyer on the sideline again in the next few years. Dungy is a good choice to take over the program but pro coaches haven’t fared well on the college level, Carroll being the obvious exception. But as Dungy is a leader and motivator as much as an X’s and O’s coach he’s probably a better fit than most. Personally I think Gary Petterson would be the best fit. The defense UF would have every year would allow them to continue to be a force in the SEC.

Meyer will be an interesting case if he comes back. The UF job will be taken (poor guy who takes it will always have the Meyer looming over him as a replacement, at least in the fan’s minds) and I don’t think another college job would interest him. So it’s off to the NFL but the stress there is even worse than in college so how does he reconcile that?

  5. What about Peterson from Boise State? If UF hired him, it would be like DeJaVu from 5 years ago. A talented young coach that built a BCS powerhouse dynasty at a non-BCS school. The systems are similar, the job might be to much for Peterson to say no to.

Also, Utah’s current coach has done a great job since Urban Meyer left.
Charlie Strong has not signed a contract with Louisville yet. Dan Mullen (Miss St.) could come back to UF to coach them.
And as much as I hate to say this one, Petrino from Arkansas will probably be a candidate.

    GO GATORS!!!
