With the season upon us, it’s time for me to reveal the the 2010 edition of the very prestigious HP All-American team.
Quarterback
1st team: Ryan Mallett, Arkansas
2nd team: Kellen Moore, Boise State
3rd team: Case Keenum, Houston
Honorable Mention: Terrelle Pryor, Jake Locker, Christian Ponder, Jacory Harris, Andy Dalton, Jerrod Johnson, Andrew Luck
Comments: There are a ton of great candidates for this position, but I think Mallett is poised to have the best season of the bunch. A 4,000-yard, 40 TD season is not out of the question given that he played so well last year and he is now in his third year in the system. Moore is as savvy as they come and his numbers are incredible, while Keenum is simply the most productive quarterback in NCAA history.
The season is almost upon us, but there’s still time to join the HP Fantasy Challenge, which is merely the best college fantasy game on the net. The deadline to join is Sept. 8, but waiting that long costs you the benefit and flexibility of a bye week.
Here’s your chance to win 2 BCS title game tickets. And until the end of this week, I’m offering two teams for the price of one.
Just as it did for Sam Bradford last year, and just as it has for every other returning Heisman winner–save one–for the past 76 years, Heismandment No. 9 has once again exacted its tribute.
Alabama will be without Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram for Saturday’s opener against San Jose State, and probably longer, after he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee Tuesday morning.
His return for the Penn State game looks to be unlikely.
This just illustrates how difficult it is to have consecutive healthy, productive and Heisman-worthy seasons, especially when you are a work-horse back like Ingram.
I don’t doubt that he will come back to put up some good production this year–Ingram’s a warrior with a big heart, after all. But we can pretty much count him out for the Heisman in 2010 which, of course, is what I have written all along (to the consternation of so many of you).
In the meantime, here’s hoping his recovery goes well and he’s back out on the field soon.
Player, total points (first place votes in parentheses)
1. Mark Ingram, Jr., RB, Alabama – 26 (6)
2. Terrelle Pryor, Jr., QB, Ohio State – 18 (2)
3. Kellen Moore, Jr., QB, Boise State – 12 (2)
4. Jacquizz Rodgers, Jr., RB, Oregon St. – 6 (2)
5. Case Keenum, Sr., QB, Houston – 4 (1)
Ryan Mallett, Jr., QB, Arkansas – 4
7. Ryan Williams, So., RB, Virginia Tech – 3
8. Dion Lewis, So., RB, Pittsburgh – 2
9. Jake Locker, Sr., QB, Washington – 1
John Clay, Jr., RB, Wisconsin – 1
Michael Floyd, Sr., WR, Notre Dame – 1
About the poll
The HeismanPundit.com Heisman Poll is made up of 13 Heisman voters from across the country. They vote for three players each week. Tabulations are made on a 3-2-1 basis, with three points awarded for a first-place vote, two points for a second-place vote and one point for a third-place vote. The two years the Heismanpundit poll was the most accurate in the country, picking five of the top six finishers in the Heisman vote in 2008 and the top four in 2009.
Members of the panel include: Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel, Teddy Greenstein and Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune, Olin Buchanan and Tom Dienhart of Rivals.com, Jenni Carlson of The Oklahoman, Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com, J.B. Morris of ESPN the Magazine, Austin Murphy, B.J. Schecter and Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated, plus Dick Weiss of the New York Daily News.
Chris Huston, owner of Heismanpundit.com, coordinates and also votes in the weekly poll.
HP’s Thoughts
A relatively weak preseason field means incumbent Mark Ingram holds a solid lead over No. 2 Terrelle Pryor. The surprising strength of Kellen Moore in this poll puts him in early striking distance of the top if he can lead his team to a win over Virginia Tech next Monday. With only two seniors on this list, some of these guys could be in the Heisman conversation for the next two or three seasons.
From a Voter
“Voters can’t retract their 2005 Reggie Bush ballots, but at least they can vote for the second coming of Vince Young. Pryor’s remarkable mobility will overshadow a suspect arm, especially if the Buckeyes roll to the title game. Meanwhile, Mark Ingram has the best chance to repeat as Heisman winner since Sam Bradf…, er, I mean Tim Tebow. Ingram’s biggest problem may not be the target on his back or Bama’s brutal schedule, but the back who is going to siphon his carries, Trent Richardson.” — J.B. Morris, ESPN The Magazine.
Heisman Game of the Week
No. 3 Boise State vs. No. 10 Virginia Tech — This game features Heisman hopefuls Kellen Moore and Ryan Williams in the most high profile matchup of the opening week. Whoever shines in this Monday night showdown could emerge as the early favorite.
Player to Watch
Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State — Pryor’s name recognition and unique skill set, combined with his status as the quarterback for a top five team, gives him an advantage over most of the other candidates in this race. Now, can he finally fulfill his ample potential?
This Week in Heisman History
Miami’s Vinnie Testaverde went just 12 of 25 for 163 yards and threw three interceptions, but the Hurricanes snapped Florida’s 21-game home winning streak, 23-15, to kick off what was to be an undefeated regular season. Testaverde would go on to win the Heisman Trophy.
…is coming Monday.
Be sure to check in…have a great weekend!
