Almost every game is key when it comes to winning the Heisman, but some matchups are more important than others.
Here is your 2010 Heisman Big Game schedule:
Sept. 4
Oregon State vs. TCU–Jacquizz Rodgers can get his Heisman campaign off to a good start by having a productive game against the highly-rated Horned Frogs.
Sept. 6
Boise State vs. Virginia Tech–Kellen Moore and Ryan Williams will have Monday night all to themselves. Moore has a chance to show that his incredible numbers aren’t just the result of playing in the WAC, while Williams can show his outstanding freshman year was no fluke.
Sept. 11
Florida State at Oklahoma–Christian Ponder’s first test. Maybe Landry Jones emerges?
Miami at Ohio State–Jacory Harris vs. Terrelle Pryor for the Heisman pole position.
Penn State at Alabama–We’ll see if Ingram has it in him to challenge for another Heisman. Could Evan Royster make a splash?
Oregon at Tennessee–LaMichael James makes his season debut in the heart of SEC country.
Sept. 18
Arkansas at Georgia–Ryan Mallett and Arkansas will let us know if they are a force to be reckoned with.
Nebraska at Washington–A rematch of that classic 1991 matchup, giving Jake Locker the perfect platform to get his Heisman hopes rolling.
Houston at UCLA–One of the few chances Case Keenum will get to showcase his talents against a BCS opponent in 2010.
Sept. 23
Miami at Pittsburgh–If Harris is coming off a win over Ohio State, he’s got a chance to build momentum here. If he’s coming off a loss, it’s a chance to rebound. Dion Lewis can get into the race with a good performance here.
Sept. 25
Alabama at Arkansas–The SEC’s two top Heisman hopefuls square off. Will have ramifications later in the season.
Oregon State at Boise State–Rodgers and Moore go head to head. The loser might be out of the race.
Stanford at Notre Dame–If Andrew Luck is to make a run for the Heisman, it begins here. If Dayne Crist is to wake up the echoes, it begins here.
West Virginia at LSU–Mighty mite Noel Devine has a chance to shine here against a stout defense.
October 2
Florida at Alabama–This could be a make or break moment for Ingram’s repeat hopes. It could also show that John Brantley is a legit contender.
Texas vs. Oklahoma–If Garrett Gilbert is to be the next great Longhorn quarterback, he’ll probably prove it here.
Washington at USC–Locker could do what no quarterback has done since Ell Roberson–win two in a row over the Trojans.
October 9
Florida State at Miami–This could be a Heisman elimination matchup between Harris and Ponder.
Arkansas vs. Texas A&M–If Mallett is in contention at this point, a win here gives him momentum. It’s also a chance for Jerrod Johnson to make some noise in the race.
October 16
Oregon State at Washington–Rodgers vs. Locker in a Heisman death match.
Ohio State at Wisconsin–Pryor vs. Clay in a Heisman death match.
October 23
Wisconsin at Iowa–A chance for Clay to build momentum if he’s coming off a win over the Buckeyes.
October 30
Stanford at Washington–Locker and Luck battle for title of top Pac-10 quarterback.
Nov. 4
Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech–Williams reemerges after eight weeks out of the spotlight.
November 6
Oklahoma at Texas A&M–An upset by A&M could propel a late season run for Johnson.
Washington at Oregon–If Locker is to have a chance, he’s got to beat the Ducks.
November 13
Penn State at Ohio State–Pryor in the spotlight once again.
Cincinnati at West Virginia–This should be an entertaining game. If Devine runs wild, he might be in the mix.
November 20
Ohio State at Iowa–Another week, another ‘prove-it’ game for Pryor.
Virginia Tech at Miami–If all goes according to plan, lots of voters will be tuning in to see whether Williams or Harris are Heisman worthy.
Wisconsin at Michigan–Clay might be eyeing 2,000 yards at this point and licking his chops over the prospect of playing the Wolverines.
November 26
Auburn at Alabama–Ingram’s last hurrah?
West Virginia at Pittsburgh–Battle royale between two elite backs.
November 27
Michigan at Ohio State–Pryor can clinch the Heisman and, oh, so much more with a win here.
Florida at Florida State–If the Seminoles are finally back, it will take a win against the Gators. Ponder’s last chance to show he is the man.
LSU at Arkansas–Three years ago, Darren McFadden used this game to vault his way to New York. Could Mallett do the same?
Houston at Texas Tech–Keenum will already be the NCAA’s all-time passer at this point, but this is an opportunity to show his stuff against a BCS opponent.
December 4
Oregon at Oregon State–If either Rodgers or James has a shot at this point, this game will be decisive.
SEC Title Game–We don’t know who the teams will be, but we can be pretty sure a Heisman contender will be involved.
So says this agent in the Washington Post.
It’s an interesting read. I don’t agree with the clinical, privatization aspect of his column, as it ignores the traditions which make college football so appealing, but he is right on about the gibberish that is the NCAA rule book and the charade of pretending players are actually student athletes.
Here’s a good story by the AP looking at Mark Ingram and the difficulties he’ll have as he tries to win a second Heisman.
“The thing that you face is you’re everyone’s target when line up on Saturday,” said Ware, who left Houston for the NFL after winning the Heisman as a junior in 1989. “Everyone wants to say, ‘I hit the Heisman Trophy winner.’ You become everyone’s claim to fame so to speak. So every weekend, because last year’s Heisman winner plays for Alabama, it’s ammunition enough but when you’ve got the Heisman winner on your team, everyone wants that shot to say that they beat the Heisman winner.”
Check it out.
I dig this teaser. Looking forward to the full video release:

The case of Johnny Rodgers is a great example of a Heisman winner overcoming personal issues and adversity. But it’s also illustrative of how the times have changed.
He grew up in Omaha. He ran away from home at the age of 14 to Detroit, but came back after one year. By the age of 15, he had already been stabbed and had shot another kid in the stomach. Shooting craps was his biggest source of income. In 1970, he and a bunch of friends stole $90 from a gas station. He received probation for the crime, but later served 30 days in jail for driving with a suspended license. Many saw him as college football’s bad boy. Despite his actions and his shady image, he was able to stay with Nebraska and lead the Cornhuskers to a national title in 1971, while winning the Heisman in ’72.
If Rodgers were playing today in this hyper-intense media environment, he probably would’ve been run out of Nebraska on a rail. He would’ve been kept as far away as possible from the football field.
It’s interesting that in this day and age, when we consider ourselves more open-minded than, say, 40 years ago, the penalties get meted out with such swift justice (mostly to placate the court of public opinion), while the supposedly close-minded era of Rodgers’ time was more quick to forgive and allow for possible redemption.
Or maybe they just wanted to win at any cost back then, too.
