On Bush’s Heisman

Here’s a piece by SI’s Joe Posnanski on Reggie Bush and the Heisman.  I think it is spot on.

If the Heisman Trophy people want to make some sort of statement to express their dismay, well, people seem to love doing that sort of thing. But if they take away Reggie Bush’s Heisman because they believe that their award represents something pure and virtuous and innocent, well, that’s where I get off this crazy thing. And if that happens, if they really do take away Reggie Bush’s Heisman, well, I hope someone does some sort of deep investigation to find out just how many Heisman winners were paid while in school. The Heisman people just might find themselves with a room full of repossessed trophies that used to mean something before they tried to make it mean something.

Keep the can of worms closed.  It’s not worth it.

Not into the rewriting history thing.

DEFINITELY not into the intentionally opening cans of worms thing. There are cans of worms all over the college football landscape, and if we want to have worms all over college football, we can just get an industrial-strength can opener, have at it, and say goodbye to the game.

Not into USC at all, not particularly into Reggie Bush, but you gave him the Heisman, don’t take it back.

Don’t penalize Reggie unless you penalize any Heisman winner who ever did anything wrong? It’s like keeping prisons empty until we catch all the crooks.

Reggie Bush cheated starting more than a year before he won the Heisman. He also lied repeatedly to conceal his ineligibility. Name one other Heisman winner that behaved so dishonorably. Bush is a stain on the Heisman as USC was a stain on the last decade. Enough is enough.

    Classic.

The Heisman Foundation didn’t “open a can of worms”. The investigation was conducted (well, I guess we can call it that) by the NCAA. Knowing what they know now, stripping Bush of the award is the right thing to do.
