It was 20 years ago this week that Ty Detmer carried BYU to a scintillating win over No. 1 Miami, a performance that led to his becoming the first–and only–non-major-conference player in modern times to win the Heisman Trophy. Here he is evading the Hurricane rush in that game…and from what I remember of that game, he likely recovered in time to throw a rainbow pass that somehow snaked between two defenders and into his receiver’s bread basket.













Didn’t Andre Ware from Univ of Houston win the heisman in 1989. Is that not modern times?
Yes. But Houston was in the Southwest Conference back then.
