LSU, Honey Badger and the Heisman

Baton Rouge has Heisman fever and while Tyrann ‘Honey Badger’ Mathieu won’t win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, he can still make a little school history.

Mathieu is the first Tiger to go to The Big Apple as a Heisman finalist since running back Charles Alexander did so while finishing fifth in 1978. Interestingly, LSU’s only Heisman runner up, Jerry Stovall, also shined as a defensive back.

Here’s a breakdown of LSU players who have finished in the top 10 of the Heisman vote:

2007: Glenn Dorsey, 9th (30 points)
1978: Charles Alexander, 5th (282 points)
1977: Charles Alexander, 9th (54 points)
1972: Bert Jones, 4th (351 points)
1962: Jerry Stovall, 2nd (618 points)
1959: Billy Cannon, 1st (1,929 points)
1958: Billy Cannon, 3rd (975 points)

I think Mathieu will end up with the most points for an LSU player in the Heisman race since Bert Jones totaled 351 in 1972. If he can top Jones, that’d be quite an accomplishment and put him up pretty high in LSU lore.

Doing it as a defensive player makes it even more impressive.

And I’m sure that’s something the Honey Badger cares about…

    I don’t see why he’s being punished for being suspended. If one doesn’t want to give it to a defensive player, fine. Don’t use the suspension as an excuse; LaMichael James was suspended for assaulting a woman last year and still got plenty of votes.

    The “Honey Badger” is a punk. Suspended for a game, for using marajuana and for cheap shotting Alabama’s Dre Kirkpatrick from behind during a punt return where he had been beaten badly.

    He should have been ejected from that game for being a no good, dirty, cheap shot artist.

    Honey Badger is by far the best defensive player this decade, he gives it his all and never gives up. Just because he got high doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be in the race for heisman!
