Kansas State’s crushing rout of West Virginia that lifted Collin Klein to the top of the Heisman race was barely a few minutes old before the naysayers came out in force: But who has Kansas State played, they asked.
As a public service, I thought I’d provide the Sagarin strength of schedule rankings for the current crop of Heisman contenders:
Overall
West Virginia — 14th
Alabama – 26th
Kansas State — 45th
Ohio State – 59th
Record against the Sagarin top 30
Alabama — 1-0
Kansas State — 2-0
West Virginia — 0-2
Ohio State — 0-0
While AJ McCarron has played the second-toughest overall schedule to date among the main contenders, he is 1-0 against the top 30 while Collin Klein and Kansas State are 2-0 (with both wins coming on the road). West Virginia has played the most difficult slate, but it has lost to the two best teams it has faced, a simple indictment of Geno Smith’s Heisman resume. Ohio State has played the weakest schedule of the four and has yet to play a team in the Sagarin top 30, which could be a bigger problem for Braxton Miller than missing out on the Big Ten title game. We’ll update this again a few weeks from now.
