The first freshman, but not the youngest

Even though Johnny Manziel is about to become the first freshman to win the Heisman, he won’t be the youngest player to win the award.

That honor will remain with Alabama’s Mark Ingram, who won the Heisman as a true sophomore, nine days shy of his 20th birthday in 2009.

Manziel, a redshirt freshman (essentially an academic sophomore) will turn 20 two days before this year’s Heisman ceremony which takes place on December 8.
