The case for Andre Williams

I sent a word out to all SIDs a couple weeks ago that I would be glad to feature their Heisman campaigns here at HP. With that in mind, here’s the submission from Boston College on Andre Williams’ behalf:

Andrwe Williams campaign

Boston College running back Andre Williams is enjoying a remarkable senior season and is candidate for the Heisman Trophy, the Doak Walker Award and Walter Camp All-America.

  • Williams leads the nation in total rushing yards (2,073) and rushing yards per game (188.5); he is the 16th player in FBS history to surpass 2,000 yards in a season and currently ranks 12th all-time.

  • If Williams were to hit his current average rushing yards per game (188.5) at Syracuse, he would conclude the regular season fourth all-time, behind Barry Sanders (2,628), Kevin Smith (2,567) and Marcus Allen (2,342).  Sanders and Allen were each Heisman Trophy winners.

  • Barry Sanders set the gold standard with the greatest statistical individual season in college football in 1988 when he led the nation by averaging 200 yards per game and 7.6 yards per carry.  Sanders closed the final month of his remarkable season by rushing 152 times for 1,152 yards (averaging 38 carries and 288 rushing yards per game) and 15 touchdowns in his final four games.

Through three weeks of Williams’ final month of the 2013 season, he has carried 104 times for 897 yards and is averaging 34 carries and 299 rushing yards per game during this stretch.  To date, Williams is ahead of where Sanders was through three weeks of his final month of college football, outgaining him by 77 yards.  Here is a game-by-game breakdown.
