I’m from Oklahoma and a big Sooners’ fan, but I’m curious as to why you have them ranked number 1. They’ve absolutely dominated everyone they’ve played, but they haven’t really faced anyone yet. I’ll feel a lot better if they can go out and beat Texas, but they haven’t done anything like USC (Ohio State) or LSU (Auburn)…

I think you and Mandel (who had OSU at 18) have both overreacted to their USC loss. They looked terrible in that game, no question. But I really believe that they would beat any of 11-15 (except Auburn) on your list.

They aren’t and shouldn’t be in any Nat Championship discussions, but they still have a ton of talent and a history of winning games they should win (except against the SEC), so I think your backlash against them has been too great.

I think HP must stand for Homer Poll.

    Oklahoma hasn’t played anyone.

USC beat up on a Virginia team that lost to UConn by about the same score. Ohio State didn’t have any running game.

LSU at 10 after beating Auburn?

    Wow.

Completely agree that Oklahoma is an unknown quantity at the moment. They haven’t played anyone.

And frankly, neither has LSU. They’ve played Appy St., Troy and North Texas, then allowed 21 points to an Auburn team that (a) hadn’t played anyone either and (b) has a terrible offense (come on: they scored 3 points against Miss St!). Their #5 ranking is based purely on last year’s NC and SEC hype.

However, I am a USC fan and you’re right about them…it’s tough to be too excited about the Trojans. Virginia isn’t a good team, and TOSU was without Beanie. Plus, it looks like the Pac is down this year, so that should be a negative impact on their strength of schedule.

In a nutshell, it’s too early to tell anything. Let’s see how things play out.

    Amen, Max.

The Trojans do look solid, I’m not saying they aren’t.

It’s a shame that they won’t play a team that could give them a close call.

Seems kind of like the 2007-08 Ohio State team. They looked good against fair competition, but they can’t hang when it counts.

The team USC played was not the OSU from last year, and not even close to the OSU team that played Florida.

Give Georgia some love. They’ve played better teams(and more games) than USC and Oklahoma.

They are taking care of business. UGA gave up 4 yards on the ground to ASU and 18 to South Carolina. Georgia Southern scored more points(21) on them than Arizona State(10), South Carolina(7), and Central Michigan(17).

They play defense in the SEC.

It’s not hard to win games when you only have to score 17-21 points.

Bama should be aead of Texas, Penn State, and BYU…Why, because they played and dominated a good Clemson team, hence “they’ve played somebody”….

  7. Max on September 22, 2008 11:49 pm

Well, except for Vince Young, the Trojans have shown that they can hang when it counts. Their problem is that they lose focus against teams they should beat.

I think Georgia is arguably #1. Not sure they should have been dropped at all. I’m not sure they’ve played better teams than USC (TOSU, even without Beanie, is probably better than anyone the Dawgs have played), but i would argue their schedule is better than Oklahoma’s and they have gone on the road against a BCS conference opponent and beaten them soundly. The Dawgs definitely have the resume to go to the NC if they can pull it off. In fact, of all SEC teams, I’m rooting for Georgia the most.

TSOBO, I agree…Bama should be ahead of Texas, Penn St and BYU. The Tide look great. BYU looks pretty legit, too - I think they’re a top 10 team.

Robert, It’s not hard to win when you only have to score 17 to 21 points? lol apparently it ain’t easy holding other teams to less than 17 to 21 points though is it? Those same offenses have had lil trouble against dahOSU or most pac1 teams. But then again the big11 or pac1 will never know what good defenses will do for you. Well, with the exception of USC and they didn’t exactly slow down Texas in their last big OOC game.

  9. AUman76 on September 24, 2008 1:27 am

Max, with or without Beanie dahOSU chokeyes aren’t worth a damn. They would be a third or forth place team in the pac1 and that ain’t sayin much. USC has beaten two BCS schools with familar names only. ND has been exposed for years as a passed me by program and now so has dahOSU program. Sure they get their Ohio State Championship to begin every season and the usual big11 trophy but so what? There’s at least a dozen teams across the nation that would win the big11 if they were members. Hell, I wouldn’t doubt Vandy being able to kick Bucky’s in the nuts. I’m not sling BS here when I say, Vandy is pretty damn good. This ain’t your daddy’s, umm…grampa’s, well great grampa’s Commodores. lol
USC’s OCC schedule looks good on paper but the teams they played and will play ain’t what they use to be. None are capable of staying close to, much less beating elite teams. Not my biased attitude this time either. Those are facts that have been proved on the field of play over the course of at least three seasons or more.

Max….you must be really dialed into the college football scene…
    I mean…
Come on….you have every right to slam LSU for beating the defending national champion in Division 2 or whatever it’s called…and North Texas…and Auburn…that could barely beat Miss St….
But is your head so far up your ass that you don’t know that LSU didn’t play TROY because of a Hurricane?

Let’s just wait till December to decide how high and mighty USC is…
